See I'm A generation or two behind-ish and i would pretty much own someone with a high end i7 and a gtx 580, but because of skill. just my two cents
i use a 2600 by 1900 or something like that 30 inch monitor and i turn my Field of View all the way up when it is an option. you dont have to have three monitors to get the benefits of having three monitors. you can also get a single large high resolution monitor. (which i think is better because everything supports single monitors.

With PC prices are you looking at exponential increase in price for little gains in performance.

You can easily build a rig that will play BF3 no problem for $1500, that is including various periphials if you dont have them already.

For me, once I get the game to run at a steady FPS, the biggest upgrade I can think of that actually affects your score is your internet connection, and mouse.

I don't understand your logic though. How would someone with "higher-end" hardware exactly win? Higher FPS sure, cause if your lagging your going to get killed. Using a 10 year old dusty, broken ball mouse will also put you at a disadvantage.

Higher settings only really help I guess, seeing people far off. Other then that, extra dust, smoke, vegetation make seeing enemies harder. And more lighting=more gun flare.
I built my friend a system with a 955 X4 and a 5850 for $496 the other day, it was nuts how low the prices were... got the GPU new for $119 on NCIX...
