It would be about all exclusivity. But then, that's a losing battle anyway. I figure the more exclusives at this point the better, because maybe if gamers don't always want the service being forced upon them they'll actually think about forcing their preferred service on others. I guess not though, this whole debate has proven that pretty thoroughly..
What exactly is the artifical distinction here between valve and EA? A publisher isn't allowed to make decisions about a game? O.o
If you have something against Valve doing this then go ahead and start a petition. I have not seen one yet, but if you can link me one Ill take a look at it, so im pretty sure even though people complain about it it is not enough for them to start one. Steam was 'probably' the first to do this sort of thing, but then expanded in selling other games so it is not useless just for valve games. That in my opinion is what sets them apart. If you want to go back to playing with WON, I believe it was called, go ahead. Steam has worked very hard over the years to improve their system for ease of patching, community, and marketplace(not just for themselves either). Once EA starts doing the same I would mind testing it out.

I hated EADM, and origin. It is specialized only for EA so far so it is useless to me.

No, it doesn't. It doesn't stand at all. You're drawing an arbitrary line where you want for absolutely no reason. EA owning DICE is quite literally the same thing...

I don't know of any petitions, there may have been some when it was introduced, though for a lot of games it comes up on the individual game's forums.

No, consoles did it first. Steam actually managed to recreate the console wars on the PC. Actually, that's kinda hilarious now that I think about it.

I have no idea what "WON" is, but there are other platforms out there, I myself prefer Impulse, since it doesn't get in the way. But I don't really care if others agree with me, I support the ability to choose.

First Bold: It's not the exact same thing. Steam is owned and run by Valve, Valve makes their own games, Valve releases those games digitally on their platform. Valve does not force dev's to choose Steamworks, the devs make that choice. EA owns and runs Origin, EA doesn't make BF, they publish and distribute. DICE was purchased by EA, who is now forcing them to release only on Origin.

There's that little technicality in there.

Again, this is all rumor mill anyway since it's available elsewhere at the moment.

Second Bold: You support the ability to choose, and yet we can't? That makes no sense. That's exactly what this is, we DON'T have a choice.

I'm not saying any exclusivity is ok, but I personally am not talking about exclusivity in general, I'm talking about 1 specific game, and that's BF3.

Explain how consoles did it first? As far as I know xbox360 did not introduce digital downloaded games until just a few years ago, PS3 I have no Idea since I dont own one. XBOX and PS2 did not have the ability to purchase and store games on their harddrives without hacking it.

WON or what ever it was, the name escapes me, was what all valve games used to connect online and such. It was similar to all stand alone games back then. It was very outdated even for back then. Slowly everyone started to move over to Steam with its new UI and ways to browse for servers. It no longer to 30mins-1hr to find and install patches since steam did it for you.

Its very hard to find actually videos on how the valve games use to work and the UI, but I dug this one up. Miss the old UI, brings back memories.

So you don't think a company should be able to decide where its products go. That's what you're saying. Except that valve is different.

Which has only come up because it's exclusive to a non-steam platform. If this had been announced steam-exclusive, there probably wouldn't have even been a post about it.

But yes, I'm a bit hypocritical in that I'm only supporting this because, hell, nobody cares about exclusivity elsewhere, why should I bother opposing it here? When they came for the blah blah blah I did nothing and all that jazz.

Are you not reading what people are posting regarding this matter? It is the companies decision to be exclusive to steam, but when the higher ups give the ones that created the game no option where to sell it digitally and have to be forced to use a new client a fewer people own is a problem.

I'm saying it doesn't matter who is making the decision. This artificial business about the higher ups is nonsense anyway. A publisher has just as much right to put something in the contract as the developer has to walk away from that contract. Maybe they should have self-published? Oh wait, they're owned by EA, so... EA makes the decision about an EA owned game...

BF3 is available everywhere else expect Steam. I think that's the essence of the argument, if BF3 was on Steam right now and not on D2D, most gamers wouldn't even blink an eye. Steam's new rules will probably prevent EA's new titles from being distributed on Steam, mainly because of Origin, and EA probably wants it that way. But Valve and EA has to work it out for the benefit of the gaming community.

Both parties have to be very careful not to alienate their fanbase.

Sorry, but users were able to purchase games on XBOX 1. I purchased a few games from their store.
Halo and Fable were sold through XBL on XBOX 1. Black was another.

Not quite. I think a company has every right to decide, but the problem arises in that we don't know what say DICE had in all this. It's like Microsoft forcing devs to charge for dlc on XBL. We don't agree with it, but if the dev/company agrees, that's on them.

All we know from this rumor is that EA supposedly said "Origin exclusive" and we don't know if DICE said 'hey wait' or if they said 'ok, whatever'.

As of now, we can still buy BF3 elsewhere, but where the choice comes in is if the rumor is true and you HAVE to use Origin to run the game. We lose our choice there. And sure, it may be hypocritical, but the fact is, Steam has been around for 8 years, and is doing this right. Origin is new (relatively) and is imposing install/acitvation limits on top of already established DRM.

I've got more than 175 games on Steam, I like using it. It works, it's done well. Making me (possibly) be forced to use some new thing for just 1 game is quite annoying, especially since it's only for EA games and ONLY for the newer ones.

And I've bought games through many other digital distributors, and none of them have the qualities of Steam.

Again, no I don't want any exclusivity anywhere, but I barely touch Valve games anymore anyway (haven't got Portal 2 yet.)
