$900 Build (no vid card or storage drive needed)

Thread Starter
This build is for a friend who is doing mostly photo and video editing, with the occasional game here and there. He already has a video card and storage hard drives. So no, I am not forgetting anything. I'm assembling it for him and I will likely kick the CPU up to 3.8 or 4.0GHz on the stock voltage and cooler. He showed me an i7 960 bundle he was going to get, here it is: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...1388&CatId=333

I'm hoping you'll agree that this is a better buy. Please make suggestions if you'd like. He is picky on the case. He was going to get an NZXT Temptest EVO for $100, but I talked him into the 600T for $120 (with combo on the AX750 which I already decided he should have). So case suggestions probably won't get very far as I doubt he'll take anyone else's suggestion for a case. He also insists on two DVD burners, and that they be LITEON. All prices are given after combo discounts and mail-in rebates.

$410 - i7 2600K w/ MSI P67
$270 - Corsair AX750 Gold Certified PSU w/ Corsair 600T case
$100 - 16GB (4x4GB) Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600
$64 - 64GB Kingston SSD
$42 - Two LITEON DVD Burners
$25 S&H
---------------------
$911 Total

Critique, but only if you've read the entire post....

What video card does he have? The only reason I ask is you might be able to get away with something like an XFX 650W PSU and then buy the 600T separately. If his vid card isn't powerful you would save money

He has a 6850. I know a 750W is overkill, but I wanted to get him a Gold Certified PSU to protect his investment and save him money on his power bill, and lower capacity Gold Cert's are almost as expensive. Plus, with the AX750, I get $30 in combo savings on the 600T, which made it more reasonable. His other case of choice was the NZXT Temptest EVO for $100, so I thought the 600T + AX750 combo was worth the extra money over a Temptest EVO + lesser PSU (say... a TX650). I'm buying this for him in exchange for his photography services, and I would feel like a jerk saving myself money to give him lesser parts.

EDIT: And apparently my sarcasm offended a Mod. If my sarcasm is edited away, could you please edit away the sarcasm of the Mod? I didn't read a two week old sticky in a section of the forum I have regularly devoted countless hours to assisting. I feel as though my contributions deserve a little more respect than the cutting sarcasm of justarealguy. If you want to make a post on my thread that makes me look like some idiot who blatantly disregards forum rules, the least you can do is allow me a response. And if you edit this away too, please leave my response to wonka08 up. Thank you.

Looks good.

Your 16GB RAM link goes to a 8GB kit I hope you know. I hope he can make use of 16GB of RAM if that is what you're getting. Might want to look into some Corsair Vengeance or G Skill Ripjaws for lower RAM voltage.

Can make use of SSD caching for a few bucks more with this board combo:

Yea, sorry I vaguely implied that I was getting two kits with the (4x4GB), but yes I am aware of that and getting two kits, thanks for pointing that out. The rebate AND promo code are actually both good on two kits

Lower RAM voltage is tempting, but the $50 4GB kit is hard to pass up. Anything extra would need a cutback somewhere else as I'm already over the $900. I like him... but I'm on a budget haha.

Thanks for suggesting that board. I'm skeptical though of the poorer reviews as compared to the MSI P67, and the lack of information on that board. Doesn't even list any specs under the details tab. How much RAM is supported? Seems... sketchy...

That is an extremely great build for the price.
Good job on all the combos/rebates/promos.
Just letting you know that that SSD is really old and not the best of its kind. Its 1GB per dollar so its hard to pass up.
You could very much save on case and PSU and maybe get a used C300 or Vertex 2.

Fair enough on the RAM.

The board is fairly new and rather basic as is the MSI one. 32GB Max RAM support. The MSI is still a good choice too.

Yea, I jumped on the SSD though as they "rarely" (every few weeks) go on sale and it had already made slickdeals' front page. I was like AH!! and jumped on it, as it was lucky that a deal was being offered the day my friend suggested I could buy him that $900 combo instead of paying him the agreed upon $1200 for his photography services. I told him I'd beat that deal even with a SSD so I was quick on the trigger when I saw the sale haha. Should still be a nice improvement over his mechanical drives.

Well I went ahead and bought the parts, as the RAM is now also on the frontpage of Slickdeals. A bit overkill on the case and PSU, but hopefully those are parts he'll keep (and save with on power bills) for years to come. Thank you all for your help! Glad to see after months of overclock.net neglect I didn't make any horrific errors in choosing parts haha.
