I think I messed up by adding a video card to my main rig. :( - Page 2

I read it

Here for example, and threads over @ Stanford

Lots of people fold with rigs that are greater than i7's. Stanford have also said that Bigadv running on an i7 is pushing the boundaries of how slow they want the work done

I know loads of rigs have more than 8 cores (although few have more than 24, which is why I went that far with my numbers). My query was about how we know it's primes that are the issue, aside from someone just mentioning it with no backup behind it. I can't see anything that suggests using 9 or 15 cores is ok, which would tend to suggest that it isn't primes but is odd numbers that cause issues.

After all, 2 is a prime number, and that works fine...

2 and 3 are fine; always have been really.

Stanford advise against using prime cores. I'm guessing they didn't just pull a random guess out of a hat, just like they don't go around the forums telling us not to fold SMP on a Wednesday, or don't fold ATi if you're wearing a hat

It's an issue with the GROMACS coding, by the way, not the Folding clients/WUs themselves, so nothing Stanford can do by advise against it.
