Sound card for Z-2300? Worth it?

Thread Starter
I do enjoy the quality of my audio (I was a music major before switching to CS).
I have a set of Logitech Z-2300 speakers which are decent speakers but I'm sure not even close to the best in terms of sound quality.

Will getting a sound card be noticeable with my current speaker set up? Is it worth it?

If so, what are some cards to look into getting?

I think it will be quite noticeable. I have speakers which might be considered to be worse than the Z-2300s (I have the Altec Lansing VS4121s), and I noticed a massive difference when I upgraded from the Audigy 2 ZS to the X-Fi XtremeGamer (the one that looks like a low-profile card). The Audigy 2 ZS is actually a pretty good card and is probably better than the onboard audio your motherboard has.

So I think my recommendations are of course the XtremeGamer along with the ASUS Xonar DG, DS, D1, or DX. I think that you'd be very happy with any of these.

I only bought my card for 5.1 support. The Asus Xonar series are awesome!

Good to hear. I know I hear the audio right now and it sounds *fine* but that's probably because I have nothing to compare it to.

Well, time to start researching audio cards!

I opted for an upgrade to the Creative SB Titanium HD, as I still play games that use EAX, from a Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series. I AM AMAZED at the sound quality.

I hear nuances in the music I just didn't know were there in songs I have listened to for over 25 years.

I also am using the Logitech Z-2300 speakers, and JVC HA-RX900 headphones.

If you like music you might like the SB Titanium HD, the Asus Xonar Essence series or the Omega Claro series. These are audiophile cards with high quality sound components to enhance audio performance.

Start off with a Xonar DG - fairly cheap and will definitely give you a difference in audio quality and also a wider range of options to play with in the audio control panel.

What is the difference between the Xonar DG and DX?

$30 seems a bit cheaper than I was expecting, but if it does what I am looking for it to do than I am really excited about the DG.

the DG is PCI , 5.1 has a built-in headphone AMP
the DX is PCIe , 7.1 has no headphone amp but has higher component quality , produce better audio quality

worth extra 30$ ..............IMO no

Glad to hear! I'm doing more research on the DG and it looks like the best price/performance ratio out there. Plus, if I decide to upgrade later, I only wasted $30 the first time.

Plus, I'm assuming it beats the crap out of the integrated audio!

Feel free to continue to weigh in!
