Undr $300 HTPC/PVR - Page 2

@Coersum
Forget the suggestions to go with the Atom/GMA 3150. You'll find it has a lot of videos it won't be able to play. That's already a darned good system you have there for just $300. You'd only be saving an extra $20~40 or so if you decide to go with Atom/ION or Zacate, and no doubt the Pentium Sandy Bridge is a much, much better CPU (better than stock C2D E8400, even).

However, you might want to wait around for desktop Llano. Pentium SNB is better as far as CPU goes but the GPU on Llano is supposedly HD 6450 level.

I had an Atom/Ion build for a HTPC, I sold it 2 weeks after I got it since it would not play nice with 1080p. Even OC to 2.0, it would stutter with Hulu/Flash playback horribly (this was with the "new" Flash 10.1 that was supposed to fix the problem) and I had issues with live TV playback with an ATI 650 tuner.

I ended up going with a Athlon II on a 785g board, works great. I got a combo from Microcenter for $60 for both.
I had a Sempron 140 for a while that worked just fine, but ran at near 100% and made the fan stock fan run at full speed and was too loud.
I had tried the same board with an Athlon x2 and it had problems with Hulu and live TV.

You could always look around on here for used stuff to save some $$.

@Blupupher/Rui-mo-ma> This is also why I was trying to stay away from those board setup, depending on your video card, they might be enough for a regular htpc but since mine will have 1 or more tuner card which means possible 1 show recorded + live tv watched/paused, or 2 shows recorded and moving played in back.

For these reason, I need a cpu that can handle it, I think the dual G620 sandy should easily handle the encoding and with the help of the new intel HD graphics in it, it should be good on playback too. And with the MB type I want (2+ pcie x1 and 1 pcie x16), I can always add a cheap low profile video card later if problem arise compared to those ion/atom setup that usually have just 1 port of some type.

Still trying to lower the price however, I found a similar MB on the "For Sale" section and trying to talk to the seller to make it worth while to get a used MB, might try to find a cheaper HDD (for now $50 for 1TB) but the easiest price reduction might be the case! $60 is high but damn htpc mini case are expensive!

Recording takes almost no CPU. If you are recording HD content it is up to your hard drive and there is no encoding done. If you are doing SD..I cant remember if the 1250 has a chip on it to help it or not...either way you will be able to do 3 recordings and watch a movie at the same time and not even notice.

The case is the thing that you see...make sure you like it.
Everywhere I have read says the g620T has a lower profile cooler but dont know if it is true.

might i suggest
http://www.microcenter.com/specials/...ndlePROMO.html

Phenom II x2 + a cheaper board. the Biostar and Asus mATX don't look BAD (89.99)
Toss in a 512mb 5450 (19.99) or some other "small" fanless GPU

Just a thought..

@hick> This is true, Right now, recording 720p (Criminal Minds), I see about 20% cpu usage over the 3 cores (I have an Athlon II x3 445 3.1GHz) but I have a few things loaded so I'd say it's about 10% cpu used for recording that max. As far as having a chip, I am not sure, I know the 1250 doesn't have any hardware encoding (2250 does hence the higher price + dual tuner). Either way I think anything with at least dual 2.5ghz+ should be able to record 2 programs and watch another.

@Von_rottes> Those are pretty sweet deals, sadly none of the mATX MB showed have (2) PCIe x1 and (1) PCIe x16. I have those requirement because of current hardware owned, price of upgrade and so that this box will last long enough.
I have an hvr-1250, will buy another for $30, for a total of 2 tuners (2 PCIe port), a hvr-2250 with 2 tuners in one box will cost $130, and I want a PCIe x16 free in case I need a video card later on.

Or what do you all think, with that the "Phenom™ II X2 560 Black Edition" and maybe 30% of my cpu used for 2 encoding, will it be able to play 1080's with onboard "NVIDIA GeForce 7025" of the "Asus M4N68T-M V2" without problem ? (so I could set one tuner in the PCIe x1 and the 2nd in the PCIe x16)

What kind of cable/satellite are you getting? Comcast and others are switching to digital cable only so you need a CableCard. A QAM tuner will not be able to decode.

Duckie> OTA, over the air, I get all major network for free and in HD (homemade antenna that works better than the amplified ones I tried).

Turns out, the deals from MicroCenter are out of my reach, I just noticed those are In-Store Pickup only, and the closest store is 3 hours away... sad panda!

Nvidia 7xxx Series/630a info 1080p.....Maybe I don't have any exp with that stuff(i do know a Intel 945G will play 1920x1080). it SHOULD play blu-rays since its HDCP compliant

As for the CPU usage, I wouldn't have the slightest clue

Sadly Von, unless you can pick it up and ship it to me the combo deals from MicroCenter is our of my reach hehe. Thanks a lot though (I mean that lol), that got me excited for a while, I could have gotten a 4 cores Phenom at 3.2Ghz for $4 more than the 2 cores Ahtlon at 2.8Ghz.
