Remember Phantasy Star 4?

*Shivers*

That game would scare the crap out of these new-age gamers.

How could it get much easier? Only at one point did I have any trouble, and that's because I had done no grinding, so my stats were very low.

FF 13 was easy compared to every other one I've played, it was also one of the worst FF games I've ever played. I miss the SquareSoft of days gone by.

Here's a quote from a co-worker commenting on Square before they merged with Enix:
Quote:
Nearly all of Square’s hottest development talent, the employees who made them what they are, departed prior to that deal. These are the people who made Final Fantasy 1-9, Vagrant Story, the Tactics series, etc. Even their second-string teams created an impressive chain of hits (remember Bushido Blade or Einhander? Xenogears?), and those guys filtered out during the same period.

The Enix merger was partially in response to their talent problems; it was an attempt to revitalize their workforce.

Pretty classic scenario, actually. Squaresoft was a victim of its own success and its management practices. They were wildly successful, but their employees were working constant 80- and 90-hour weeks for years on end. When those folks burned out and started looking around, they were in very high demand due to their impressive portfolios and they got snatched up immediately. Square was left with a skeleton crew of young employees trying to steer a behemoth and had to take pretty drastic action… the company was literally hollowed out, and in a relatively short period.

The new Square’s pretty much a shell of former glories. Truthfully, only the Enix properties & personnel are doing well; Dragon Quest is probably propping the whole enterprise up at this point. Worse, every four or five years the company decides to be a film studio as well - and literally bets the farm on some soulless CG movie.

Since when did Square start doing difficulty levels for mainstream FF games...
sad day indeed...
Final Fantasy X: International had a "hard mode" of sorts by using the "Expert Sphere" grid which pretty much made maxing your characters stats super impossible to do.

But I will say this much, I kinda miss the extremely complicated RPG's of the past. The newer ones are focused way too much on graphics rather than gameplay.

I remember this expert sphere grid..
I did it, and I killed all the dark aeons still.. only took me a save on about 160 hours..

This game was... hard? Anyone who had trouble with any final fantasy game, ever, really sucks at games. They are probably the easiest RPGs around and always have been.

But it does make me remember something interesting - in the past PAL versions of the games were always slightly more difficult than the NTSC versions. I remember realising this when I played FFIX. There is one part of the game where Kuja summons bahamut against the Queen's fleet of ships and then you start running down this section of tree. While you are running down, you are attacked by monsters. In the PAL version you are attacked more times than in the NTSC version. I found this pretty interesting - why did European gamers get it slightly more difficult?

It's irrelevant now though. We are all getting dumbed down 'movie' games. I'm pretty sick of it to be honest. If I want to watch a movie, I'll watch a movie. Now every game, not just RPGs, have stupid movie scenes all over them. One of the things that made JRPGs special in the past is that the story part was almost like reading a book, and you use your own imagination for the voices, it became a personal experience.

Now we get B-grade movie acting. Awesome.

Edit: Forgot to mention, in general players so seem to suck a lot. I remember when FFX came out, I didn't have a ps2 and one of my friends was complaining how she was stuck trying to beat Seymour. She made it seem like an epic battle. When I finally got to play the game and got to the same stage, I beat the guy in like 5 minutes.

I think video games are easy because most of us are VERY well practiced by now. I find myself spending more time at the beginning of RPG's trying to break the game and max my characters. Since most RPG's use such a similar formula, it ends up being routine. The game isn't hard anymore once you can jump right to the top of the curve. We're all so well practiced that its pretty difficult to come up with a puzzle/statsystem/monster easy enough for a beginner to deal with, but hard enough to make a veteran sweat. How do you make a game difficult, but still accessible enough for mass market?

I realize this more and more as I introduce my GF to more video games. She is struggling with some pretty basic elements that all of us have long ago absorbed into our long term memory and written off as a given.

i played a boss that required me to grind for 2 hours and then i would always die and eventually discovered that his health bar didn't matter, you had to do some oblivious story relevent attack to actually kill him. i stopped playing after that.

Indeed. FFXIII certainly wasn't too hard for me, but it's certainly the most frantic-think-on-your-feet FF yet. That means something. Some of my friends who aren't bad with games in general are having a really hard time with it.

Myself, I really like that the game forbids you from grinding too much during the main story. For some, that's easier. For some, that makes it much harder.

But I do wish there was a newgame+ mode, for an easy-medium-hard option. How "hard" would that be?

At least there's no Yunalesca in FFXIII. gah.

I thought the game only had EASY MODE since you don't even have to worry about dying, even during boss fights...
Main character (fighter) B-character (healer) (no mana, infinite heal).
Hold up on the analog and press X to beat the game.
