[FRAPS] Caviar Black 1tb vs F3 1tb

Thread Starter
For recording game footage at 1920x1080 @ 60fps
(ie. Sustained writing)

Is the cavier black worth the extra money?

The Caviar Black has double the cache and is SATA III

Cavier black --$95

F3 --$60

@ 30FPS you won't be limited by either. I'd go for the cheaper one

The Samsung F3 beats the black in write speeds. So again I would go with the F3

The caviar black does not compete with the F3 in terms of write speed. It's supposedly more reliable, quieter and runs cooler making it a good choice for an OS hard drive.
In the games that I've tested, the average write speed requirement with those settings is 71 Mb/s, depending on the game and situation. I believe FRAPS mostly benefits from sequential write speeds, which would give the F3 a slight edge.

You need a 5400RPM Green drive.

For FRAPS recording, sequential write speed is where it's at... but since sequential performance arcs downward for HDDs as you approach the inside of the platter, higher capacities will work better.

Seek times barely factor in...

Take this F3 and F4:

Now lay them overtop each other. For highly sequential FRAPS recording, the F4 wins. It stays above 71MB/sec way longer.

Even a WD Green would be good, if you can find one on sale for cheap. (WD20EARS - WD Green 2TB - $70-75)

Is this drive better than:

Samsung EcoGreen F4 2TB HD204UI
Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 2TB
Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB ST2000DL003
Western Digital Green 2TB WD20EARX
And the ones previously mentioned in this thread?

Is it worth the extra $30 over the others?

Also whenever I record, I am locked to the recording fps, even when "Lock framerate while recording" is unchecked.

Ideally I want to play WoW at 60fps, while recording at 30 fps.
