Stop recommending 650W-850W power supplies for single card systems

Knock it off, you're making people waste money. I guess a lot of you are newer users, but you could still look at what the more experienced are saying. If the person is going to use a GTX590 or HD6990, sure recommend a 650W. But if they're using an HD6950 or GTS450 or HD6850 and state that they aren't going to SLI/Crossfire, then recommending a 650W or more is wasting their money.

And before saying "they may want to SLI/Crossfire later", first check and make sure that they have a dual slot motherboard in the first place.

That's true, my 550w powers my rig fine, just limited up to 215w tdp for gpu.

580 would have been nice but my 470 still powers thru games fine.

Why are you ranting mate, People ask for advice and people give advice... it's kinda what OCN is all about. IMO most systems should have a 650w in-case of future upgrading. That being said if someone puts a post up asking which PSU to purchase and says specifically that he will "NEVER" do sli or Xfrie or upgrade at all...EVER then i cant imagine anyone here suggesting that he/she should purchase a 650w. And in all fairness its not really that big of a deal. They have google.

It states 9 times outta 10 in the thread weather or not they want to "maybe" upgrade later on or if it doesn't it's assumed. I mean come on this is OCN, upgrading is like an every day occurrence around here. Personally I don't think this thread is necessary or needed you could have had a rant in thread where your IRE was aroused. But hey that's just my 5 cents.....

Longevity wise... Is it not better for a PSU to work at < 50% load, than > 50% ?

I usually recommend 500-550w units for one card builds, however I buy heftier gear myself. There is nothing worse than deciding to go SLi and having to sell and ship a PSU (shipping is absurd!) then pay for a new one+shipping.

He's right though, I know better then a lot of people how much of a waste it is to run 650+ with a single card. Let alone 850w. I've recommended more then what's absolutely needed on more then one occasion.

What we need is a complete list of what will be ran. Fans, motherboard, HDD's, GPU(s), CPU(s), etc. Because most of the time a certain unit will run a setup just fine, but it will lack the necessary number of connectors. Or a unit that seems perfect, but doesn't have enough amperage on the 12v rail. More information is needed to make an informed recommendation.

Built a demo rig last weekend and at the last minute decided to throw a GTX590 in for a 3d setup. Was a bit worried as i had fitted a TX650 but it purred along quite nicely, no strange noises coming from the PSU or card.

PSUs are more efficient and effective at >50%. Probably last longer too, though most of the time you won't be using a PSU until it dies (if it dies pray nothing joins it).
