Stop recommending 650W-850W power supplies for single card systems - Page 4

+1 to the PSU expert (Phaedrus)

I ran my 2600k @ 5GHz and two 5870 2GBs @ 1GHz each off an Antec Neo Eco 620c.

EDIT: Phaedrus, I do have a question. There was a guy earlier this week OCing his 6950 on a TX 650. He said that the 12v rail started to really droop as he took it above 980MHz. Once he switched to a 1200w he didn't have this problem. Now, was this just because the TX 650 is an older PSU? Or something else?

Recommended Wattage:635 Watts

Please note that those numbers are relative and do not include GPU OC. I have a 750 W Corsair and I doubt it would handle perfectly another 570 with full OC on both cards and CPU. And efficiency is at its best at around 50 % of PSU power, so I don't see why we should not recommend 650 W for gaming rigs.

A 650 W PSU holding SLI of 570 ? Are you sure ?

PSU calculators are unreliable. I find the eXtreme.outervision.com one tends to overestimate for newer cards and underestimate for older ones. It used to recommend ~500W for a system with a 4870; now it recommends a 350W.

I am 100% positive that you could do SLI with overclocks on your current PSU.

Lol, this also reminds me of a review I read from one of Newegg's "expert" buyers about a Silverstone Strider 1500W. He said it wasn't enough to run two GTX 580's and he had already fried two AX1200's! At some point you want to just say to some people, "Look buddy, you're doing it wrong!"

But if they're using an HD6950 or GTS450 or HD6850 and state that they aren't going to SLI/Crossfire, then recommending a 650W or more is wasting their money.

And before saying "they may want to SLI/Crossfire later", first check and make sure that they have a dual slot motherboard in the first place.
Sorry but I would never get branded 650W PSU for 6950 in CF. Minimum for me is 700-750W. Thank You.

I ran a 4870X2 2GB with an Antec EarthWatts 500W and my sig rig below for a few months with no problems at all.

Getting overly powerful PSU's is overrated and is a waste of money.

If people DO actually upgrade to CF/SLI, then buy a more powerful one and sell the old one. Its really not that hard.

I was talking to my old boss who has an 850 watt PSU in his system. From what I gather he was upgrading to a 2600k and keeping his 460 video card.

Get this, he told me he needed to upgrade the PSU (the 850watt psu) in order to accommodate the upgrades (the 2600k). I told him 800watt should be enough but he said "no, no, I have fans and hard drives that need power."

Since I was quitting that day I said nothing, I was waiting for my final pay-check so I didn't argue with him. Really for any single card system a 80 plus 450 should be enough to power his system, 500w for security maybe.

I totally agree with this, even though the PSU in my rig is totally overkill. But I was once running two 4850's in SLI.
