I'm SO glad that people recommended me a 650Wat unit. I Said I would NEVER crossfire, and I had a Sinlge PCI-E slot motherboard when I bought my 650W unit, Now I have crossfire and oc'ed cpu + 4 HDDs with all the other sutff. If it hasn't been for people suggesting a higher PSU then needed, I would have spent like $100 more Bucks plus I would have an Unused PSU collecting dirt. Suggesting 650W-750W PSU is ok. 850W-1350W Its overkill and they should NOT be recommended if not needed. Nuff said.
If you said you would never crossfire then ended up doing so, than it is your fault for giving false information. If I asked for a PSU for crossfiring 2 high end gpu and people recommended me a 750W then I decided to buy a low end gpu only, does that mean I am allowed to blame others for wasting $100 for not recommending a 450W or so? Recommendations should be based on needs, price, and quality.

I have a EW 650 and I think it's right where I want to be for my single card system.
My PC can pull 500w from the wall at peak draw overclocked and 150w is not what I would consider overkill for that sort of draw.
I think 600w-650w units are fair for the heavy hitters like the 480/580, any less and you don't have much room for error especially when you get into overclocking.
Besides that the prices and connections on the 600-700w systems are fair. OP would know better but I'm pretty sure when you get below 600w you start running into lack of connectors like dual 8 pins or a 8pin and 6 pin that are pretty much standard on the mid range units.

I'm going to sli my rig when 470s get into the $140 range. I have a little more than your standard person as far a extras go so having a quality psu was worth it. I bought this psu years ago and it has allowed me to continue upgrading. I use 9 sata power connections and I must power those somehow with long enough cables.

PSUs are investments like nice cases, good fans, bay devices, water-cooling loops, and keyboards because the technology basically stays the same throughout the years. 1000 watts is overkill but saying a 750 watt is overkill is a little near-sighted.

Edit: ( I just bought the x750 because I want a silent pc. I had a corsair 750tx)

Thank you. I should have phrased it like that from the beginning.

Since the topic is about the right PSU for a system, is this a good site to calculate power requirements? http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Kind of. Better to ask on here.

Agreed that it does not fall by much towards the top. I would imagine that other quality units have somewhat similar curves. But there is a sweet spot. Right around 50%.

Yeah actaully there is

Not having the right case, and having to ship/buy one of those
