Stop recommending 650W-850W power supplies for single card systems - Page 10

Even so, having a higher wattage psu is always when you consider 90% of OCNers will upgrade their hardware in a year or two. The less money you have to spend on new parts the better.

I don't see the big deal, Usually people in these part's are finding a dependable 650w PSU often times 80+ Certified for less than a dependable 500w. In that case, Why go with the lesser wattage?

My rig is powered by a corsair hx850 and that's definitely overkill, but i'm glad I have the capacity to spare. I went 7 years between new builds, so i'm in it for the long haul. My psu happens to have a 7 year warranty.

I actually picked out my psu after reading up at hardocp. They do great reviews covering everything from build quality, ripple, droop, actual efficiency at several different power draws, etc. The review I read was on the 750 unit, but I went with the 850 due to a good combo deal and rebate on newegg. There were many more considerations other than rated wattage.

Also a little overkill may buy you a little quiet since many units in the same series share the same fan. The one that isn't working as hard may put out less sound...maybe. I have yet to be able to discern my psu noise over the rest of the system.

If you haven't yet, check oh hardocp and their psu articles, they're great.

I think I want to keep my 750 for as long as I can, I only regret not buying a modular one Those were too expensive for me at the time.

The trend seems to be more performance, less power usage. They keep shrinking down die sizes and lowering TPD, so 4 years from now 650W will still be a sweetspot psu. And the guy who buys the 650W power supply today is going to be purchasing a new power supply in 4 years when he builds a 8 way Sli GTX 990's and 2 intel X7 32core's "Gaming" computer.

If it's 10-20 more, why not?

Unless you're on like a super budget...

Someone recommended me a 430watts for i5 2500k and 5850 which I know is enough but I want a headroom for my system so I decided to look again. I found cx500 for 59 and 650w antec earthgreen 80 bronze for 65. 6$ is not a big difference right?
