If I would do this how and with which tool should I do it ? I have a disk of GParted so I figure that i boot into there and make a small 60 gb partition on the left of the bar and then make a big partition on whats left and then format them both to NTFS is that correct ?

Are you able to boot into the OS with another drive? then you can right click 'my computer' and scroll to 'manage' then 'disk management' to manage disks and partitions

Err..Im not 100% but think you can actually setup partition options during the OS install process at the beginning, pop in the OS disk, and have a look, im pretty sure you can.

Edit: OR if you have access to the OS right now, just use the disk management tool in windows i posted earlier, and create a partition at the faster(left side on the management illustration) of the disk.

You can just use Windows Disk Management if you have a reasonable amount of room. Use the TB drive if you're close to full.

If you have enough room, you can shrink your current partition, format the raw space, move most over to free up room, and shrink/expand as needed.

It really isn't a hassle with Disk Management, but do what you want. Neither is difficult.

Of course it makes a difference. You tightly control where your data ends up. On a full drive, the edge of the platter is more than 100% faster than the innermost portion.

Correct.

Just look at HDTune benchmarks. Edge = ~150MB/sec, inner part = ~75MB/sec. The closer you get to either side, the better or worse off you'll be.

And that isn't even factoring in seek times.

Correct. Also, lower seek times.

The difference is quite pronounced. If you have a tiny OS partition, creating System Restore points is vastly faster. (and in turn, installing stuff is usually faster) But if you partition your whole drive, you don't gain that benefit, as Windows often sticks those system files way into the partition.

On average it's about 60%. If it isn't worth it, then I guess RAID arrays aren't either.

Regular defrag does an awful job keeping your most important stuff on the edge.
