HELP: Everest and CPUZ crashing on startup

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
I'm thinking it might be my ram acting up,4x2gb Patriot Viper DDR2-800
It's not software related, I was getting the same crashes in Vista with another built but with the same hardware but different versions of everest and CPUZ

Ok here is my problem..

Everest Ultimate edition:
it loads I can click all the tabs but as soon as I click the "overclock" or "memory" tab, my computer freezes.

No dump file created
No event logs

CPUZ 1.57.1:
loads 1 out of 3 tries.. when it crashes.. it crashes on the loading screen on SPD

No dump file created
No event logs

When CPUZ does load, I have all the correct timings and information in the memory tab's.

I'm thinking it's either bad ram or something the software can't read/access properly

BIOS:
DRAM @ 2.1v
I tried auto DRAM clocks
Recommended Jetec and performance clocks
Disabled/enabled DRAM auto tweak performance
Disabled/enabled Optimal performance mode SPD
Ganged/unganged

No change.

PC at default clocks
disabled antivirus

What can be causing this?
Tonight I will run memtest on my 4 sticks

If it passes, I will try each stick one by one and see if CPUZ and everest crash.
If I still crash,I will swap Dimm's
I have some RAM at work since I'm a tech.

but the only RAM I have is some cheap Kingston Value ram DDR-800 1gb
I'll try 4 sticks of that and see if I still crash..

Any other ideas?

Have you tried the latest Aida64 (new Everest)? If its a specific hardware issue they may have addressed it.

No I have not, I'm at work now so I can't give you the exact version # but it's not the aida64 version
It's the Everest Ultimate edition.
I have the latest CPUz version though.

Also, I tried different cpu's as I thought maybe it was a compatbility issue with a AM3 CPU in a AM2 board.
AM2 6000+
AM3 235e
AM3 245e
AM3 955 BE
So I'm sure it's not a cpu problem.

If CPUZ is crashing on SPD is it possible it's RAM?
I have the latest drivers for my SB/MOBO and everything.
but like I said, I'm sure this is not OS related as it was doing this with my Vista built also.

I'll try Aida64 tonight and see if it crashes.
BTW, the computer works perfect, never crashed in it's life during gaming/Hd playback etc.. its just when these programs go to access/read some MB/RAM information either in the bios or somewhere else, they crash my PC

also, I don't get a blue screen, no dump file... just a freeze and I have to cold reboot.

It does seem like an issue reading the ram, that would still be done through the mobo though so one or the other or a combination of both is all possible. I've had experience with Everest\Aida64 support and suspect if this is a known issue that's already been reported they may move faster than CPU-z towards a solution. Have you searched their forums?

no, didn't check the forums there, I'm overclock.net loyal lol,
I will test my ram first tonight.
Try different DIMM's
If I still crash, I'll try the Aida version and see.

I read the troubleshooting for CPUZ,
I will try the standalone version vs the setup version and try the debugging suggestions :
Quote:

CPU-Z causes a general protection fault, or freezes my system, or causes a blue screen.

edit cpuz.ini, and replace:
DMI=1
Sensor=1
SMBus=1
Display=1
UseDisplayAPI=1

with:

DMI=0
Sensor=0
SMBus=0
Display=0
UseDisplayAPI=0

Then run cpu-z again. If it works, restore the "1" one by one, until the problem occurs again. Then send an email and mentioning which "1" is responsible.
Maybe I'll be able to isolate the problem this way.

BTW, thanks for your help

Update:

Alright, CPUZ is not really stable..When I change SMBus=0 it loads but sometimes it crashes...
I decided to abandon CPUZ and just stick with AIDA64 since it more complete.

Now I downloaded the latest AIDA64,I would still freeze.

BUT in AIDA64 in the "preferences/Stability"

I disabled "low-level SMBus operations..

AIDA64 is stable.. no more crashing in the overclock tab/memory tab etc..

I will submit the SMBus Dump file on the forums there and see what they think.

I will update my post here.
