Ok, I'm ready to upgrade my old Acer 5720Z laptop and I don't know which way I should go. I have an iMac that I use for work (video editing), mostly what I like my laptop for is working on creative stuff while not sitting at my desk.

I am a science fiction writer, so I write on my laptop, but I also design some of the things that I talk about in my books in photoshop or 3dsmax.

I'm leaning toward a tablet as a laptop replacement mostly because their batteries last much longer than most laptop batteries, and I would like to be able to write without worrying about a battery.

So help me decide...
-------------------------------------------------------------
LAPTOP:

Pro-
Built in keyboard
Ability to run photoshop and 3dsmax
larger screen
can edit and maintain my website with Dreamweaver

Con-
Not very good battery life
Doesn't have that WOW factor, I always wanted a tablet because I grew up envying people on Star Trek, lol
-------------------------------------------------------------
TABLET:

Pro-
Much longer battery life
Touch screen and sketch apps to quickly sketch ideas
Easier for reading books, comics, and teaching my little girl things

Con-
No built in keyboard, have to use external keyboard
Can't find any good CAD apps or good drawing apps like photoshop
Can't find anything like Dreamweaver for Android either
-------------------------------------------------------------

Let me state that I'm looking at the Acer Aspire One Notebook (not the netbook) and the Acer Iconia A500.

The Aspire One claims a 5 hour battery life...but I doubt that. The Iconia does support a standard USB keyboard.

Also unless the iPad has some seriously good CAD, WYSIWYG HTML editor, or photoshop-esque software please don't mention it. I hate emailing files to myself, if it showed up like a hard drive when I plugged it in, then maybe I'd consider it.

with what you like to do away from your desktop pc a laptop would be a lot more functional for you. I would go laptop over a tablet in your situation.

Why not the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer? It has most of the specs of the Acer Iconia A500, and also comes with a keyboard dock which turns the tablet to a netbook when connected. Battery life is great at 9 hours tablet, and up to 16 hours with the dock. Also has 2 USB ports with external storage and game controller support with the dock, as well as an extra SD card slot.

anywho, the transformer is a pretty good runner i must admit. theres a few netbooks with the new cpu from amd, that has somewhat good graphics (6130??)

tablet is cool and all, but for the same price *maybe cheaper* you can get a good notebook. i bought a netbook, returned it after 3 days. to each his own i guess.

good luck!

I agree, in most respects a laptop is the way to go...except for two things:

1. Laptop battery life sucks compared to tablets
2. I've just being pining for a tablet computer since I was like 10 years old...but I can't justify it if I can't do what I need to do with it

I did read it, iPad is as capable if not more capable than any other tablet.

MacBook pro has best laptop battery life and has all the programs he needs.

starting to really consider the notion of getting two cheaper items instead of one more expensive one.

thinking about maybe getting a netbook and a nook color. a netbook would have good battery life, and the nook color would be a cheap way of indulging my "geek factor" desire for a tablet.
