Not a terrible idea, but unless you have very specific applications in mind for designing which will only run on the netbook's windows, I'd highly recommend going with the Asus epad transformer, as mentionted above.

The Asus will allow you to crudely paint, and type anything as simply as you could with a netbook and will run as a tablet at much faster speeds than the nook. There is also the software included with the Asus epad which will allow you remote connection to use all the software and files located on your home PC.

I'm a nook color owner. If I had the dough at the time and they were readily available I would have purchased the Asus. In your situation, the Asus will definitely be cheaper than a nook and netbook (of decent quality).

ASUS Transformer, man. Turns from tablet to netbook and back in seconds; only costs $550 if you get the 16GB version and the dock.

But if you want to get a netbook and a separate Nook Color, you can root the Nook and install Honeycomb on it. Some stable builds are already released in the wild.

where do you get the dock for the transformer? I can't find it on the Best Buy site (which is where I'd be buying from)

also will it allow me to remote control my iMac or a Linux computer, or does it just work with Windows?

The dock is pretty hard to find, but they should be available in retailers like Newegg, Best Buy and Fry's Electronics.

And no, sorry I don't have experience in Mac OSX or Linux, so I cannot comment on the remote control part. However, the method of controlling a desktop is via the cloud, with ASUS' own service to sync your machine to the tablet.

Evidently, this is the software that is used when you use the Asus' "MyPC" function.

If you're trying to connect to your home PC over the internet (not the same WiFi network), then you'll have some more configuration in your future, but I think it's very doable.

why would the EEE Slate not be as functional as the Transformer?

I would think Windows 7 is more stable for what OP wants to do than Android Honeycomb 3.0

also Honeycomb 3.0 is buggy as hell on the Nook Color, most people are using Gingerbread CM7 (thats what mine was on b4 i sold it last week)

I vote for you getting a tablet PC, then it is a tablet and a PC in one.
