So what's the deal with Bulldozer mobos?

I'm still out of the loop. Are there current motherboards that will fully support BD? Are they backwards compatible with the Phenom II's? Is it going to be like Intel with Ivy Bridge where some of the new chips work, and some still require a new motherboard?

Thanks for any help.

Almost all amd newer motherboards will support bd.

However, according to AMD, only the 9 series chipset will give you the best performance out of Bulldozer. There's a bunch of 990FX series motherboards out but they are all really lacking in features that should be stock on any enthusiast board in my opinion.

Look for the black cpu socket. All AM3+ boards will have a black socket, and standard AM3 will have a white socket.

That's just the simple way of putting it. It does get a little more complicated. Some motherboard manufacturers are now putting the black socket on 800-series chipsets. They will run BD, but only the motherboard manufacturer will support you if it doesn't. AMD will not support such a configuration. AMD only supports bulldozer on the 900-series chipset.

It gets even more complicated, because there are a small handful of older AM3 boards (with the white socket) that will also support bulldozer with some reduced functionality. Those boards require a bios update, and support is very dependent on the board manufacturer.

They are all compatible with AM3 cpu's.

Yes.

AM3+ socket is black, combine that with a 900 series chipset and it'll handle anything Zambezi throws at it

I do not know why you have to make this so difficult.

Bulldozer uses AM3+, if the board is AM3+ It will support bulldozer. There are no just AM3 boards that have the 900 series chipset, so most obviously every 900 series chipset board will support bulldozer.

I'm just making sure its not an Ivy Bridge situation where socket support varies. For example, Ivy Bridge is supposed to support LGA 1155, but the better models may still require a new motherboard.

Awesome, thanks. Hopefully some more info and some benchmarks come out for BD soon, I want to see if its a better road to take than an i5 2500k.
