Is my PSU dead?

Thread Starter
So I just built a sweet rig as shown in my sig. It made my life complete for a little while during the time it was functioning properly. Yesterday I was playin some Half Life 2 for a couple hours all fine-and-dandy, no problem. Before I called it a night, I decided to leave my computer to idle so that TRIM can do all that garbage collection on my SSD. So that's what I did.

Some couple hours later, to my disbelief and to my horror, my computer was gagging to death with repeated power on/off cycles not even able to reach the BIOS let alone show activity on my monitor. I quickly arose from my slumber to assist my computer while it (figuratively) puked out its electronic peripherals and molex connectors and whatnot.

Anyway, so enough of the dramatizations. This is what my computer was doing. I awoke to the sounds of my computer as if it were rebooting every 1 or 2 seconds. the LEDs on the motherboard would turn on momentarily as if it were about to start, the fans would begin to spin (including the PSU fan), and all seemed to be in order. That is, until about 2 seconds later when the system would shut down and repeat this never ending cycle. No BIOS beeps were heard, no visual display on my monitors either.

My best estimate is that the PSU is kaput, even though it was brand-spankin-new. Can any well-seasoned computer expert confirm my belief? This was my first build so therefore I am not knowledgeable enough to determine any other cause. Help!

Thanks in advance.

p.s. I am at work at the moment so any advice given to me will promptly be examined when I arrive home today.

I assume all is at stock no overclock? I would start at the psu and would work my way from there.

Yes, the system was not in overclock mode when this occurred, even if it was, a 750W PSU should still suffice. What would the next likely component be causing what I described above?

Did you smell anything, also try going into the bios if thats possible. Also check if all cables are tightly fastened.

I didn't smell anything out of the ordinary. Perhaps my drunken sister in the next room. No burning if that is what you are asking. The cables were tightly fastened, I am sure of that. I hadn't moved the computer from the day before when I was using it.

+1 for power supply. On another note, you should pick one of these up.

They're handy to have around and won't leave you guessing like we all are right now.

P.S. Is your sister hot? tongue.gif
