Hard drive problem

Hi, I'm hoping you can help.

I have a Western Digital hard drive which my PC cannot read from. The BIOS recognises the drive as the IDE master and can read its model number, but when booting into Windows (from a SATA SSD drive), Windows takes ages and ages to boot, and the Western Digital drive makes a strange noise (a whirring noise maybe?) about twice a second. Windows eventually boots and the hard drive does not appear as a drive letter in Windows. One time it has appeared as a drive letter, but when I tried browsing to it, it took ages and then complained of an I/O error and the drive letter disappeared from explorer.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can access the data on the drive and transfer it elsewhere? I have some forensic tools (in BackTrack 5) but I can't seem to point them at the drive because it does not have a drive letter.

The whirring noise is most likely the hard drive trying to spin and failing. It usually attempts several times every few seconds from my experience. At that point I take them apart and steal the magnets and order a new one lol.

To try and save data stick it in the fridge/freezer in a ziploc bag for a while then plug her in cold on a paper towel to prevent condensation issues. That has worked a few select times for me.
