A bit off topic but it's very ironic that somebody who has "Audiophile" in their name would say something like this. Netflix sucks for audio. It is not just bad, it is outright terrible. Almost no content is in surround, let alone anything higher than 5.1. This is not even accounting for the $hitty content selection they have, especially in Canada. If you have have a decent AV setup at home Netflix is probably the worst thing to come around in ages. Sure it is convenient for access and cheap, but the benefits stop right there.

I don't. I have a PS3 and still only buy regular DVDs unless there is Blu-ray out for the same price.
You Pay $10 and get the Combo Packs which Have 3d Blu-Ray, 2DBlu-ray, DVD, and Digital versions.

The difference in picture quality is so huge that DVDs look like a Cam you downloaded off the internet.

HD is 10 years or older by my count since I can run HD resolutions on my monitor since 1998.
Did they have 1080P monitors in 98? Computer monitors have always had much higher resolutions then TV's, that doesn't mean we have content to support them. HD Content is something that came out this gen with Blu-Ray and 1080P Streaming.

Its all about audio too. I spent $1700 on a very nice 7.2 Home Theater Setup that sounds incredible with DTS HD and TrueDolby HD

It's like with the damn Xbox 1 too. You have no idea how much I hated that crap without buying the stupid remote.

It's a pain in the ass. Whether someone here thinks its not necessary or not, believe it or not - people find uses for it. When, for one example, I go away - depending on what "vacation" it may be - I like to bring something to entertain me. Why should I have to bring the console AND a DVD player when the console is FULLY capable of doing it? Massive problem with the Wii. I felt stupid when I tried to watch a movie on it because it was the only thing I had only to learn that the DVD console could not play DVDs.
Every Hotel I have checked into the past 4 years has a DVD player underneath the TV, and I travel for a living. Sure the TV may be a Tube style, but they atleast have a DVD player and Cable.

Really though, who cares? It cuts costs which is good for us and there's one less part to break. Anyone buying a Wii U already has a dvd player, which is also outdated.

So basically they'll have a gaming console that will play their games and most likely stream Netflix and Hulu. That sounds good to me. If it did that and had at least 720p, they'd be good to go. If you're honestly buying a Wii for DVD playback primarily, then I guess you just made a stupid decision when you went through with that transaction.

If it can't read DVDs or BlueRay...then that means it is going to be very reisistant to pirating games. I don't think the Wii U will have a hard drive and it probably isn't hard to hardware it in to only put save games on the attached SD cards or USB flash drive.

I am betting that piracy is the real reason. People would have to burn game ISOs onto these proprietary disks and do so in the proper way. If they can keep tabs on the manufacturing of the disks then very few will get out to even be used for piracy even when a method to copy the formating came around.

Proprietary media hasn't really stopped piracy in the past.
Look at the massive Famicom/NES piracy market for example.

People actually would make their own cartriges for NES games? wow...you know pirates...there comes a point were it is just more cost effient to just buy the damn game.

If they can't make the media then it won't work though and making an optical disk would have to be darn hard and take some extensive equipment.

Now they might get the game into a "ROM" on a harddrive, but then they would have to either have an emulator to play the game on the computer or else somehow network the Wii U into it and get it to play the game...something that should also be easy to exclude in the firmware/hardware and any emulators would be many years away.

Regardless...this would have to be a major hurdle for piracy.

This means they'll more than likely have proprietary hardware necessary if they plan on allowing DVD or BD playback in the future.

Oh, hi XBOX1 DVD Remote...
Oh, hi 360 HD-DVD player...
