I understand the difference in quality, I'm still not paying an extra $10 for that.

Its all about audio too. I spent $1700 on a very nice 7.2 Home Theater Setup that sounds incredible with DTS HD and TrueDolby HD
My dad still has a 1080i projection TV from 1998. I remember we had it before we had a DVD player.

Sounds like it'll end up with a lower price for the consumer, which I like.
This is what went through my mind., unlike PS3, I don't think Wii has never been intended for watching movies.

well thats a little dsappointing but when i was watching E3 and they said that it wasnt DVD or Bluray format discs for the games, i figured it wouldnt have the support. Nintendo always seemed to be console only. Personally i have never been disappointed with a nintendo purchase, and i have owned everything since the first nintendo system (all accept the original giant gameboy, i stared with the gameboy pocket ). I look at this system and really the only reason i will be buying it would be for the nintedo only titles such as the mario games, zelda and Smash Brothers.....if i want to watch dvds or blurays i use my computers or my PS3....i have a pretty decent sized Blu-ray collection and i love it, i def dont regret buying my ps3 so many years ago. Its a shame that the WiiU cant play blurays, but that wont stop me from buying it......not after they announced Smash and all the mario games.....

The only thing that will stop me from buying this is price....if they try and price it at 500+ dollars they are saddly mistaken.....

Japanese NES used 5.25 floppies, they were heavily pirated which was probably large factor in nintendo using cartidges and proprietary disc formats even now today.

Also, blu rays are more than worth the extra 5-10 dollars if you have a plasma/lcd tv.

Blu ray is like a having a master copy of a film. Its like having the film stock used in the camera to film the actual movie.

Have you guys not seen how good the Sean Connery blu ray bond turned out. They look like they were filmed yesterday.

Dvd is like having a cheap copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy.

very true but then again how much more would the system cost if it did have the licensing/hardware? Also How often do you really watch a dvd/blu-ray on your console?

I don't mind not having it since I already have a blu-ray player.

Wii U is shaping up to be a failure, like GameCube.

Netflix sucks, it doesn't have any good recently released movie available for instant streaming, you have to order the DVD. How can you people be content with this?

Because the VAST majority of people who want to play DVDs already have a way to play them.

This is true, but not wise for marketing. Plus, I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I hate having a ton of different devices to do different things when I can do them all on one.

Wow. I can't believe people care about this. Anyone who doesn't own a stand-alone DVD player by now either uses something else or doesn't watch movies. Besides that, they are dirt cheap. As for blu-ray, I was never expecting it to. I find that consoles suck for movie playback anyway. if it means that much to you, go buy a real player.

I've no doubt it will be able to play netflix though. I seriously doubt Nintendo will take a step backwards in that department.

Agreed. Just watched Pirates of the Caribbean on blu, on my 42" plasma. Looks stunning.
