Part mix and match for HTPCs (Need recommendations before I start WTB thread)

Thread Starter
After "this thread" I decided to see what I have here instead of buying new. This is a continuation of that project.
Parts I Have
-HD HTPC:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz
nvidia 8800GT
(combo struggles with true HD but does job)
-SD HTPC:
Intel P4 3.0GHz
nvidia 7600
Pretty sure both cards are PCI-e. I have RAM, OSs, and HDDs.

Parts I Need
MB: I need recommendations for cheap LGA 775 boards (micro ATX instead of mini to save cash). HD HTPC would also need optical audio out. Are there LGA boards with better onboard video then my nvidia 7600? If the price is right I'll use the P4 and onboard graphics for the SD HTPC.

CPU Coolers/Cases: Also would like recommendations for the smallest cheapest cases I can get for both. I don't need room for DVD/Blu Drive so if there are micro-ATX cases out there with no 5.25 drive bay then that's a bonus. Here is an example, Rosewill R379-M Slim MicroATX Computer Case, I hope you can find cheaper. I'd like to buy quiet PSUs but I think it's a lot cheaper to use PSUs that come included with small cases. Stock Intel coolers will do fine and I'm sure I'll find some if I start a WTB thread.

Anyways, thanks for the help in the last thread and hopefully I can start buying parts for these soon. If you have something you think I can use feel free to PM me now as well.

Motherboard

Motherboard with better onboard

Case : I picked this up awhile ago.. Actually a pretty nice lil' HTPC case. Fits a 9800gt easily.

PSU : solid performer

Cooler

Your awesome! thanks for the reply!!!

Thoughts:
1. Just needs optical audio
2. More expensive then I had planned. I "could" use suggestion 1 with the 7600 for the SD HTPC. Just need another MB suggestion with optical audio for HD HTPC.
3. I have cases similar to that around here. I guess to save money I could use what I already have. (originally I wanted mini-ATX and slim mini-ATX cases but I can't afford that)
4. They quiet?
5. Hummm, I was thinking the low profile coolers, like the stock ones. Unless the one you suggested is known for being quiet, then I'll buy it seeing how I'm not getting a slim case

No idea why this would struggle with HD considering the CPU is more than fast enough to do software decoding without help from the GPU.

I use this case for my cheapie builds but shipping is more expensive. For the motherboard, any preference to the type of RAM (DDR2/DDR3)?

This is the cheapest LGA-775 motherboard I found with optical audio out: ASUS P5G41T-M/CSM

If you still have the stock cooler, then just use that. I wouldn't really call the Hyper TX3 quiet.

Question, what connection do you use for your SD HTPC? Because if you've got it connected via S-Video, etc, you're better off sticking to your 7600. The newer onboard graphics are really more geared towards newer displays with HDMI or DVI input.

Agreed. BUT if you want a cooler get a Scythe Shuriken. For gpu I would grab like a 5550 (assuming Winodws 7). For SD what connection? Does it have to be optical out or can it be coax?

Probably more my software setup and not the hardware.

For RAM it doesn't matter. I'd prefer DDR2 only because I have some extra here but RAM is probably gonna be the cheapest thing so if I HAD to buy DDR3 I would.

For the SD HTPC I use a DVI to HDMI and run audio separate.

The SD HTPC is DVI to HDMI to a 720p LCD and I use crappy computer speakers for the audio plugged directly into the PC.

For the HD HTPC I've ran both optical and coax and I had trouble with the coax and XBMC (standalone build off ubuntu). Prefer optical.
----
As for the CPUs, I'm pulling them from dells so I don't have the stock coolers and need new ones. Anything small and quiet is preferred. I was thinking about those flat Zalmans but I haven't looked into it yet.
I also remember reading about passive PSUs too but I'm not sure how good they might be to power the desktop CPUs. The case I first linked that was too small only had a power supply that could handle about 45TDP while the Q9300 is 95TDP alone. So I'm trying not to forget little things like that.
EDIT: Also, media is stored elsewhere. Eventually I'll put small SSDs in each for the OS instead of HDDs. So quiet CPU coolers, passive PSUs and SSDs would make amazingly quiet HTPCs but I understand I might not be able to get passive PSUs (and the GPUs have fans for the moment but might upgrade 2 of them to passive GPUs in a few months).

+1. I've got two builds with Scythe Shuriken and a couple others with Scythe Big Shuriken. Both provide very good cooling performance given their size. Be careful to note motherboard layout though. If the CPU is sitting too close to the RAM slots, you might not be able to use RAM with tall heatsinks.

Forget passively cooled PSU's. With your components, a PicoPSU is on the borderline of not delivering enough power while higher wattage, passively cooled PSU's cost more than $100.

If you want a passively cooled video card, consider the HD 5450 or HD 6450. They won't give you all the post-processing abilities of the next step up models (which aside from de-interlace, I don't use) but they are silent and are capable of full MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and VC-1 hardware decode acceleration.
