yes you would. A 6990 is actually just the components for two cards (6970) on one physical card, it has 2 ram sets alongside 2 cores. The example give above with a 6990+6950 being the same as a 6950 xfire is way off the mark. I'll also let you know that if your motherboard has room for three pci-e slots that will run at 16x 8x 8x or 8x 8x 8x you can get better performance out of 3 6970's which also cost less.
