Help Souncard N00b(need new one) - Page 2

if your just using regular headphones, you won't need a headphone amp.

Even big, over the ear gaming headphones will be fine on a regular soundcard.

The $200 asus xonar essence stx is really audiophile gear designed with high end gear in mind. overkill for cheap cans.

The STX can't. There's an Essence ST, but to get 5.1 out of that you have to buy an expansion card. I wouldn't bother.

No driver problems, but also no way to output 5.1 sound and no amp--not that you need one for HD555s.

Oh I'm using a HD 555 right now...I've heard a soundcard helps pull the quality out.

Optional:
If I were to set up a HT system would i be able to output sound thru the soundcard to my AV reciever?
yes it can. It comes with an adaptor too hook up a digital optical cable that you can run to your reciever. It also has a very nice headphone amp with 2 different gain levels.

You have nice headphones. I'm using the hd 650's and using that very same soundcard and did tons of research before buying and can't reccomend the asus enough. I do not know about the creative solution, might be worth looking into, but I know the asus is quality from the many reviews I read and personal experience.

So the ASUS Xonar Essence ST can do 5.1 with optical (to a 5.1 speaker system) and to a reciever. sweet.

I guess the question is now, do I actually need it for HD 555 (I am an audophile in progress...I like hearing everything in sound)...if there is a cheaper alternative to the ASUS Xonar Essence ST i will like to see it.

although the open box price is very tempting. what do you think
post #16 of 34
That open box deal is about as cheap as your going to get for card with a built in headphone amp. This card really can pump out some volume when set to high gain..
I set mine to normal gain for headphones cause I dont want to blow up my 650's heh

So I'm guessing you noticed the difference between on board and essence then.

Thank you very much for your help, I think I will be getting the essence open box then whenever I get paid next.

Does the boxed version have anything I would need that I can't get online?

Actually reading more reviews on the Essence...I think I want something that will give me great gaming performance as well as music performance...Essence I heard doesn't have the latest EAX technology
