Help Souncard N00b(need new one) - Page 3

EAX effects are no longer used in games.

For a time, Creative pushed to have OpenAl to become a standard in Vista and Windows 7, but that has failed. Developers have moved on.

If you play legacy games, you would want to be concerned with it more.

Ok nvm. But I still would like to have an option of a 5.1 anolog sound card with a built in amp. I know for the ST there is a DAC you can buy but I can't find it anywhere

It's called an H6 expansion module. I bought mine for $40 but I have seen them new for as low as $30.00.

That is probably the best card on the market for both gaming and music.
$40 cheaper on Amazon.

i think that creative own the patent to the eax tech. but none the less, i honestly don't think you would be dissapointed.

Regardless, do some research and make an informed decision.

Personally, I have never been 'blown away' by any creative product, but then again, I have never bought any of their upper teir items, just some soundblaster cards and cheap pc speakers.

Creative products DO have good support from many game makers though.

And just to confirm, You can hook up an digital optical cable from the Asus Xonar Essence stx via this adaptor that came with my card. If it doesn't happen to be included with the open box, I'm sure Asus would send you one as they are a good company.

Heres a couple pictures to show you what it looks like. This slides onto the end of an optical cable and plugs into the 1/8" output jack on the card.

Actualy that not quite true ,only for Direct sound hal, Openal is still being used for gaming. It just now Openal+EFX that is used more so. then Just Openal alone. Since EFX can do every thing that EAX could do but is open source. Then they tend to use either OpenAL+EFX, Fmod EX or Ms's Xaudio. Tho there are still games coming out that are purely Openal+eax5 or have a openal+eax option.

@op the Xonars can emulate EAX5 aslong GX/DSGX mode is on but it is not perfect since all the emulation is doing is guesting. While the same option is needed for EAX1-2 usage in supported game and then Muiti channel output thru games that uses openal it self. Games that uses its own engine or Xaudio doesnt need GX/DSGX on for muiti channel output.

If you need a amp, you can always attach one to the X-FI HD later on in the future when you get headphones that need one.

does the soundblaster have a built in headphone amp? That was a big selling point for me (along with the great reviews), as a dedicated headphone amp can be very expensive.

Both cards look very nice. Do some comparison research and I'm sure you'll end up with a great solution either way-

Thank you!, I'm definitely repping you up. I just wish I could make a decision.

I like both gaming, music and movies...I would like to get as great of a surround sound effect as i can get with my HD 555 but I also like my music.

Realitically, I wont have time to play that much games as opposed to movies/music. I'm in college (electrical engineering) and gonna be in an ROTC program that will take my time
