Thread Starter
Hi guys i am getting a second video card and wondering if you could tell me if the existing video card is compatible with the new one for SLI. I know the GTX 480's are being phased out but anyway.

The MB is Gigabyte X58A-UD5

Thanks for any help.

Yep, I see no reason why not based on the info provided. One thing to keep in mind is if they are running at different speeds they will either not work correctly and you'd have to lock them both to the same speed with MSI AfterBurner, or the extra speed of the faster one would be wasted as the slower one would be "the weakest link in the chain" if you will. Can't remember exactly which situation will occur but either way you will be best off by just locking them together in MSI AfterBurner to the highest speed that you can attain stably on both of them. Good luck and enjoy your monster SLI set up.

Yeah - your setup will be compatible. Like juano said, the faster of the two cards will run at the same speeds as the slower card. You can force both the cards to run at the same speed if you overclock them slightly using MSI Afterburner.

But other than that, the system is all good to go.

Thanks guys for your quick and helpful responses. Good stuff im glad they look compatible. I was surprised when i saw my original GTX 480 was only 924 Mhz and the newer one is nearly 4000 Mhz.

Just a few more questions..

Will there still be a good performance boost running them together at lower memory clock speeds?

What kind of speeds would be a good match?

And is there a certain type of SLI bridge i should get?

Thanks again

They are actually running at the same memory speed just listed in different formats, the first is a single channel of the Double Data Rate 5 memory (which means Quad data rate actually) and the other is listed as the effective data rate, which you notice is 4 times the other one. So it doesn't even look like they are running are different speeds, that 1Mhz on the core is likely just due to rounding or similar. Your motherboard should have come with a SLI bridge if it supports SLI (which it does) but if you don't have one, any SLI bridge that will reach will work.
