Tri-fire (6990+6970) on air?

Thread Starter
Is it possible to OC in this Tri-fire setup on air? I have zero experience with watercooling, and while I'd like to try it, the research behind it is intimidating. Is it possible to effectively OC on air, without fear of the cards overheating?

I have proper case ventilation, and my room is usually the coldest in the house.

I think it's very possible.

I have seen 5970's paired with 5870's
they just need to have the same GPU in them.

Cards wont overheat unless it's summer and you have NO ventilation in the case

Also, might pay off to have the Hydra 200 chipset just as a backup, what motherboard do you have?

Of course you can run them on air, but it will depend if you can tolerate the fan noise. The heat of the 6990 is really something, it will run hot at stock depending on the game. I would not recommend pumping too many volts into the cards either. That will really rev your fan up and make it sound like a lawn mower.

The beauty with watercooling your GPU's is the silence AND you can overclock the crap out of them and they still remain cool. Its totally worth it with for the 6990, its such a beast of a card! And watercooling unlocks its potential.

Yeah except 3x 6970 is easier to cool if you have the slots for it

Strange, I read that 3x 6970s were even worse than a 6990+6970 setup in terms of heat output (on air). In fact, I heard that one guy had his middle card fry upon boot...

If you can space out the 6990 and the 6970 there will be no issue.
