Challenge: $500 build with OS

Thread Starter
Greetings,

A friend of mine is an independent accountant, and he's looking to build a computer that he can use to run accounting and office software. I don't imagine he'll need a whole lot in the way of hardware capabilities, and that's a good thing because his budget is only $500 including operating system, but not monitor or input devices.

Other requirements
- Must have wireless adapter
- Storage space is not a concern; he saves mostly everything on thumb drives
- Dual monitor support
- DVD-RW
- SDHC Reader
- Should last 5 years with minimal upgrades (RAM, CPU, GPU ok, mainboard and PSU are not)

Here's what I came up with:

Cooler Master Elite 330 $39.99
Asus P8H61-M $84.99
Core i3-2100 $124.99
4GB Corsair RAM $47.99
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $59.99 ($49.99 currently...)
Antec EarthWatts Green 380W $39.99
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit $89.99
Rosewill Wireless Adapter $14.99
Rosewill Internal Card Reader $14.99
Lite-On DVD-RW $20.99

TOTAL: $538.90

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can bring the cost down without sacrificing too much in the way of functionality?

Thanks for your help.
Windy

No, but I know nothing about AMD, and he's relying on me to make reasonable choices for him. I'm open to suggestions!

AMD is much cheaper. I use intel for serious/hardcore computers, and AMD for the budget ones. I haven't had a problem with AMD.

Phenom II x2 555 Unlockable to quad core and an ASUS mATX MB are $90 at Microcenter. You buy an AMD CPU and they throw in a MB for free.

Also, I saw a Nvidia GPU at Fry's the other day for $20 AR, I believe it was a GT 220 but I am not sure. Hell, it is still better than onboard graphics.

Also, Newegg had OEM Windows 7 Home Premium for $84.99 a week ago, dunno if still up.

I buy Windows XP keys from eBay all the time for $40 or less if he can settle for XP.

No can do. It's that 'accounting and office software' that I mentioned earlier. This system has to be Windows-based.

However, he's a college student also and would likely qualify for Microsoft Student Discounts. I just haven't been able to find any full (not upgrade) licenses on their website.

If you are going to buy that case from newegg, it is 39.99 but has 10 dollar shipping (49.99), which makes it the same as a HAF 912 also from newegg, which is 49.99 after rebate and free shipping. I think the 912 is a nicer case for the same amount of money.
