[VR-Z] A Look Into Intel's Next Gen Enthusiast Platform : Sandy Bridge E & Waimea Bay

For months, we've heard of the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture taking over the current generation Nehalem microarchitecture. But what do we have to replace the ageing X58 Express + i7-980X Tylersburg Highend Desktop platform? Head in and see all that you wanted to know about the next generation enthusiast platform from Intel.
Some bullet points (obviously not all) :
  • Default IMC voltage will fall to 0.85V, as opposed to the 1.1V used on current generation Nehalem microarchitecture processors. Expect Low Voltage (LV) DDR3 memory and Quad Channel Kits to become commonplace in the future.
  • PCIe3.0 is actually designed to be backward compatible with PCIe1.x and PCIe2.x, using identical connectors. 8GHz data clock rate will allow PCIe3.0 to offer double the delivered bandwidth of PCIe2.x. Since x16 PCIe lanes can be bifurcated into two x8 ones, there exists quite a few different expansion possibilities for mainboard makers to explore.
  • Intel has included "Support for Overclocking" in the Extreme Edition version of the Sandy Bridge-E. The Extreme versions of LGA2011 Sandy Bridge E will come with core and DDR ratios unlocked to facilitate overclocking. Base clock can also be raised to cause a corresponding increase in clockspeed. Intel will eventually release its Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) to improve overclocking experience on the Waimea Bay platform. The same C-states seen on Nehalem will be available on Sandy Bridge E, so you can expect to keep your Turbo Boost multipliers "on" for no extra cost."]Intel has included "Support for Overclocking" in the Extreme Edition version of the Sandy Bridge-E. To all of you "enthusiasts" who needed to upgrade from 1366 to 1155, I salute you for valiant and commendable efforts.

This is gonna be one helluva chip...
