First AMD build, getting a black screen.

Thread Starter
Hello,

First I'd like to say thanks for reading this and helping me out. Basically I couldn't resist the AMD deal at microcenter and got myself the phenom x4 840 with the msi 880g e45 board. got myself a 4gb stick of ripjaws (1600)...a 430w corsair psu, 500gb caviar blue, and oem dvd drive. trying to boot with the onboard graphics and I am getting nothing.

fans turn on and everything makes good noises and stuff but i get a black screen. want to try reseating the cpu but i don't have any spare grease. any suggestions on what to do? i've tried putting the mobo on cardboard and trying to get it to post but same deal...any help is greatly appreciated.

would it be considered "retarded" if i tried reseating my cpu without applying new grease? just put in the hsf about 5 hours ago.

No it wouldn't. Go ahead and reseat the CPU. In fact I've swapped motherboards about 3 times using the same CPU/heatsink with no ill effects. But anyway it's not a bad idea and may help you out. So after you reseat the CPU, also reseat the memory and only have one stick in and see if you can get it to POST.

interesting side note. the mobo doesn't beep at all either. i even tried the remove the RAM and see if the mobo at least beeps. is that enough reasoning to say that the mobo is bad?

That sucks

The only thing you really can do (which you probably already did most of the stuff): completely remove the motherboard, make sure all standoffs are in place. Make sure the I/O shield is mounted properly. Install the mobo into the case with the CPU and one stick of RAM. Make sure your 24 pin and 4/8 pin CPU power connector are connected firmly.

If it's actually powering on I doubt it's the PSU. Sounds more like DOA CPU/Mobo if it doesn't get fixed

Yeah...I wonder if I should just exchange both of the parts at the same time and not hassle with taking a guess.

Too bad I'm in LA right now and won't be around Microcenter until Friday. I'll update then. Thanks for the help guys.
