Camera & Lens for less than $1,200

Thread Starter
I need a camera and a somewhat wide angle lens for less that $1,200 dollars.

So what I would like is:
DSLR quality camera
Lens no longer than 26mm (after multiplier)
Smaller than a DSLR (NEX-5, Panasonic DMC-GH1, etc.)

Must have:
High quality video recording qualities
Flash hot shoe
Microphone jack
Quality on par or better than a 50D (my current camera)
Around $1,200 for the lens and camera

T1i refurb. Same sensor as 50D, and toss a Sigma 10-20 on it for ultrawide goodness. T2i is a better choice for video, though.

I don't know that, outside of video, buying anything else is really worth your money.

Doesn't make sense to get into another system -- you have a 50D, if you dont need video and just want to go wider, the only real options without a new body would be the Sigma 10-20 or the Canon 10-22.

Of course, if you go full frame, then I bet your 17-50 will treat you just fine since it'll be 17 and not slightly under 28mm.

The Sigma 17-50 is for APS-C only, won't mount to Canon FF cameras.

@OP, what about a Sony NEX-3/NEX-5 and Sony E 16mm f/2.8? It's the only EVIL camera with a full APS-C sensor and easily has the best IQ.

Those could be possibilities, they are still a bit larger than what I would like, but I could easily afford those after selling my 50D (seems to be worth about 800), and just use my current Sigma lens. I will keep those in mind, thanks.

Im not really worried about going wider, I am happy with the wideness of my Sigma 17-50. I am really looking for something with video capabilities (which I need) and something smaller.

I would love to go full frame, but they are definitely just out of my price range, plus my Sigma isn't compatible with FF

I actually do like the NEX-5 quite a bit, the picture quality looks to be on par with my 50D, and the video quality looks pretty good. But it doesn't have a flash hot shoe or a microphone jack which are both pretty important to me. I heard that a NEX-7 is supposed to come out in September which will be more enthusiast oriented, but everything about that camera is just rumors rite now.

Why don't you just get a 60D? It is smaller than the 50D and has the same image quality along with video. You said your 17-50 is wide enough, so just keep it.

I also would suggest the 60D. All of your controls will be pretty much the same.

Its a bit over my price range, I can only sell my camera for about $800 which would mean that I would be about $200 short, plus I would have to buy a SD card since it doesn't use CF, and its not quite as small as I would like.

I wonder if the best way to go would maybe be the Panasonic DMC-GH1 and a lens adapter, I don't think I would miss autofocus to much

Im going to look around and see if I can find anyone that has found a way to make or adapt a flash hot shoe for the NEX-5 and a microphone port

Your budget is $1200 and the 60D body is $999 new. A good SD card is ~$50. I don't know why you would want to change systems. You already have lenses and stuff for the EF mount. Maybe it's just me, but is that extra little bit of space savings offered by a 4/3 camera worth more than $250? Only you can decide that I guess.

My budget is $1,200 but my budget is coming from selling my Camera and Lens (comes out to approx $1,400). So in order to get a 60D I would have to sell both my camera and lens (which are the only two Canon things I own), and then get a 60D for $1,000, find 24mm or less 35mm equivalent lens, and a memory card for $200. I just don't think that would be possible (updated the OP to prevent confusion)

I'm not really looking to upgrade, I am more trying to side-grade I guess. Trading some features for others.

After using my 50D for awhile I can tell that the way/things I like to shoot would be greatly benefited from having a smaller lighter body and lens, and I really could use video recording.
