An SSD no doubt. What CPU cooler are you running? If you're on stock, then shame on you and go buy a new one.

Considering he is on X58, no point to waste money on a Vertex 3. They are fast but his controller is going to be the bottleneck. And if he does use the Marvel port he is going to lose TRIM support as well as have lower random access time.

Crucial M4s are pretty good for the price/performance. They also seem to not have any firmware issues. And usually the SSDs will not fit into normal case bays, you can just get one of these.
