They do but, I believe thats only in the, Fermi Tesla and Quadro lineup if I'm not mistaken, not in their GPU's.

my 470 still works fine, but i want a Kepler Card with at least 2x the performance and something like second-in-command to the top card, like 470 was to the 480.

look, the minute we buy our newfangled hardware, it's already a time bomb on the way to being obsolete. Best thing to do is to keep using until it cannot run the newer games fluidly or when it starts to run under 30 FPS (yea yea 60 FPS is nice and all but i can play fine at 30 FPS for me.)

Then get a new card with at least 2x performance and within same TDP of your old card.

Are these cards even really necessary? I have a 460 and I can play games like BFBC2 on max settings without any lag.

If all you play is BFBC2 then yours is fine. If you are wanting to play other upcoming games with maxed out settings like BF3 or the next Metro then you will need something else. It' all down to what you use it for.

You could see it like that in a way, but Nvidia is not actually VLIW. AMD's older VLIW5 and Cayman's VLIW4 architectures can push 5 and respectively 4 instructions per SIMD (so in a sense it's a MIMD, but the 5/4 instruction must be coded to be seen by the shader array like a single instruction bundle so it's not quite a MIMD). The problem is if a game isn't compiled or optimised to send instructions to the SIMD in bundels of 5 or 4 and sends only 2 then only 40%/50% of the effective shaders are used. This is inefficient. That's why AMD GPUs have 4x times the number of shaders and similar performance to Nvidia - some/most shaders are idle because only one VLIW per SIMD can be issued per clock. AMD used this architecture because apparently there's about the same die space used for 2x Nvidia high-clock shaders as for 5 extra wide AMD shaders.

Nvidia has a more scalar approach with the MIMD units. The instructions don't have to come in a bundle - so not VLIW, thus they're less dependent on game optimisation. They shaders are grouped in what Nvidia calls "threads", like the threads in a ribbon, but they are seen as individual instructions not bundles and are executed independently. I suppose this architecture is also more efficient in computing for some reason.

Here's a part from the google-english translation (improved by me) that may explain things a bit clearer:
Quote:
The current SIMD disappear in favor of Compute Units. Each CU now has a scalar unit and four small independent SIMD similar to Nvidia GPUs. Roughly, a SIMD instruction can perform a Cayman vec4 of 16 elements in each cycle, while each CU is capable of executing four instructions of 16 elements from four different groups over a scalar instruction. Computing power of a CU is similar to a SIMD should win today but much more efficient.

What I am wondering about is f@h - I wonder how this new architecture will play with core 16. Might require new core?

The GTX 280 I have already performs well for most games. I can probably wait another year before I need to upgrade the GPU.

They need to release Bulldozer already so I can do a system core upgrade.
