Question about temps for q6600 at 3.5 GHz

Thread Starter
Been running my cpu at 3.1 ghz for some time now and the temps using Scythe Yasya HSF were + running IntelBurn Test:

Idle: 34-33-30-31 C
Load: 54-54-52-52 C
When Ambient temp is 22-23C

I tryed to oc further and reached 3.5 GHZ @1.408v (1.5v set in BIOS) stable.

The thing is that my idle temps stayed almost the same 35-35-33-33 C. But my load temps are 70-69-67-67 C.

Are those load temps okay for such OC?

Btw my cpu and hsf are lapped...not a great lapp but a good one. earlyer the temps would hit 75-78 C at ambient 16-18C so I think that this is an improvement.

Yeah thos temps are fine... Intel burn test puts more stress than anything, you wont see temps like that ever during normal use, even folding or video encoding wont push it that high...

Intel recommends 72c or below, and the thermal limit is around 100c before it will throttle down to prevent damage...

My rule of thumb is below 72c on Prime95 and below 80c on Intel Burn Test

ty for the reply. glad to hear that those temps are acceptable smile.gif

Prime95 gives me 68-69 C its a bit weaker than IBT I think.

Ive also found this:

Q6x00: Tcase Max 71c, G0 Stepping, Tjunction Max 100c, Vcore Default 1.372, TDP 95w, Delta 10c

-Tcase/Tjunction-
--70--/--80--80--80--80-- Hot
--65--/--75--75--75--75-- Warm
--60--/--70--70--70--70-- Safe
--25--/--35--35--35--35-- Cool

does this mean that Im safe untill I hit 80C???

I don't let my q6600 go over 75c.

But at 3.9ghz @ 1.65v on prime95 (small fft's) I hit 74-77c. But that's with an ambient of 16-17c.

for how long have you been running at that OC?

Prime95 with smallfft's puts a load that would never be as hot as any program would do so I'm not worried about it.

Also, I've had this OC for almost 3 years (in september).

My temps on games that make my cpu run @ 100% never reach over 60-65c.

Well it depends how you want to interpret things. There is really no clear rule of thimb as to what temp is ok...

Intel lists a temp of 72c on their site, but the also design the chip for a thermal shut down at 100c to prevent damage.
Now if over 72c is going to damage your cpu, why would they set the thermal shutdown 28c higher?

So I say it depends on the situation, your getting 69c @ 3.5, that perfectly fine..

The one issue I see is that you set it to 1.50v in bios and it is 1.408 in windows, thats a big vdrop. I would look into a vdroop mod or see if there are any settings for LLC (load line calibration) in your bios...

3 years... well that is a LOT smile.gif)) but Im kind of worried to go 71+ C

btw at 3.4 ghz I didnt feel any boost in performance...maybe I will feel improvement when I hit a certain frequency say 3.6 ghz. what do you think?

Yea I noticed that as well, I'm not familiar with that motherboard but check to see if there is a pencil mod for it to fix that massive vdrop. I used the pencil mod on my 780i and now it actually increases in voltage slightly on full load. For example I have my vcore set to 1.655v and underload it goes up to 1.661v.
