Question about temps for q6600 at 3.5 GHz - Page 2

If those are the temps you get under IBT I'd push for 3.6ghz.
Would help if you had LLC. Maybe you do. Did you look for it?

Ive read that it increases if you shade to much (exp. not 2 strokes but 10 strokes). and that you need to clean it and try again

btw our boards are almost the same exept that you have EVGA and I have asus but maybe there is no diff. could you share a link to where the pencil mod is for 780i?

Intel lists a temp of 72c on their site, but the also design the chip for a thermal shut down at 100c to prevent damage.
Now if over 72c is going to damage your cpu, why would they set the thermal shutdown 28c higher?

So I say it depends on the situation, your getting 69c @ 3.5, that perfectly fine..

The one issue I see is that you set it to 1.50v in bios and it is 1.408 in windows, thats a big vdrop. I would look into a vdroop mod or see if there are any settings for LLC (load line calibration) in your bios....
well...yeeah I supose that makes sense
the only setting I have for LLC is Enable/Disable thats all. so the only thing left is pencil modding.

Those are nice temps, you should go for more like 3.7 Ghz.
Let your LLC enabled it's throtelling the overclock.

My Q6600 is stable at 3.6 for over a year and loads at about 80C in intel burn test.
It was also folding for quite a while so it's had a hard enough life but those chips are very hard to kill.
Mine did 4.2 on water and it's seen within 2 or 3C of the Tj max value on two of its four cores so if that didn't degrade it you should be fine at 70C.
I'd stay below 80 or maybe 85 for burn test but below 70C if possible for daily use.

If your set to 1.50v in bios, is the 1.408 what you see in windows constant, meaning at load and idle?
If so that makes some sense, as LLC is to remove vdroop.

vdrop is the difference from what is set n bios to what you see in windows
vdroop is the difference from windows idle to windows load.

Another consideration is the PSU, its possible its not able to supply the needed voltage.

I had a ULTRA LSP 750W, when I would set the bios voltage above 1.36v then I would see a vdrop in windows, the higher I set bios voltage the more the drop.
However when I got this Antec 750W if I set the bios voltage to 1.40v I get 1.40v in windows.
So the issue I had was a lack of sufficient power for the added voltages.

If your idle & load volatges are the same, or at least alot closer I would have to say it may be the PSU.....

You should be seeing a decent increase in performance going from the stock 2.4GHz to 3.5GHz. The change from 3.1 to 3.5 may not be anything alarming tho, it would depend on the game..

I've actually often wondered about the temp and voltage range on the Q6600

It was always my understanding that the spec sheet was around 70C (thread confirms with 72). But I tend to always push the extra mile and be bit higher than that because I can.

I do have 1 question while the thread is essentially on this topic: What is the max / max save voltage on the Q6600's?

I moved from 45nm -> 65nm, and on 45 1.45 was the absolute limit. I assumed 1.55 would be the limit on 65nm, but I never checked the sheets. I've seen 1.65 mentioned in this thread already. If I can pump more volts before the spreadsheet specs say "bad", then I'm certainly going to do it. I've had this thing running 3.6Ghz with 1.55, so I'm wondering how much closer to 4G I can get with 1.65v

Not trying to thread jack, just expanding the topic a bit, as voltage / temps are related.

Walnuts,

What I've done is that if the temps are ok, then I haven't worried much about the voltage.

I'd say give it a run for 4ghz but don't use much more then 1.65v I've used 1.75v but it didn't result in any better clock speeds (motherboard FSB limitations )

Haha wow 1.65v on a Q6600. Props.

I remember when they were new and everyone firmly said don't dare go over 1.5v. So much for that huh? Still the highest I'd go on my old Q6600 was 1.55v.
