Free Web design program

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

I am looking for a reasonably decent wep page designing program (something like what Front page used to be) but im not going to be using it for commercial use, just to muck around on.

does anyone know of anything that fits the above criteria?

I have knowledge of basic HTML coding etc, and can research code if need be... but programs are easier to use i have found (takes alot of time writing each line of code individually )

thanks!

Sharepoint Designer 2010 from Microsoft is free and like Dreamweaver, but if you're a student, those Dreamspark Visual Studio packages are very nice

Nothing is better than notepad or Notepad++. You be surprise how much they put in the other What You See Is What You Get programs that aren't really needed.

Looking for tutorials too?

You also want to validate your work - it gives a Professionalism attitude if your work follow the standards.

Things to note is that it is better use direct input then upload a file or a website.

If you want to LEARN HTML, I would avoid a WYSIWYG editor. It will hide all the HTML from you and spit out a very verbose, complicated HTML file that is hard to read and edit. If you think it takes a long time to type out an HTML file, you'll hate how long it takes to troubleshoot an automatically generated one that won't do what you want it to.

Learning via looking up HTML examples, and typing them into Notepad++ worked the best for me. However, I also program, and that could be the way I learn best and not you.

I can also vouch for Notepad++. It's a very lightweight intuitive coding program that works with the language you're coding to keep your syntax correct (making sure you close all your >'s by changing colors).

Other essential utilities are Firefox and its Firebug addon.

Notepad++ is what I started on, at least after I got tired of Notepad.
Definitely one of the best free code editors out there for Windows.

Here's something you might want to check out as well, I enjoy it while I'm on-the-go and it's a handy tool to have around, it gives you a lot of sandbox to play in and could potentially help you learn quite a bit about more than just editing code. It also lets you host your projects for free, which would save you from having to set up a local dev environment, if you're not keen on the idea of doing so. http://kodingen.com/
