Do you think OP will be working on a 2,200 line website with nested H3 tags under a deadline anytime soon? I get the value of what you described, it is very helpful, but no need to bash on Notepad++ like we are recommending it based on some popularity contest.
agreed, notpad ++ is an extremely useful tool for many type of coding and configuration files. It may not give you some pops ups to let you know your code is wrong but if you work with it you can tell, due to some color coding that has helped me.

LMAO at people bashing simple tools like this, and wanting it all easy for them.
GL to you that refuse to learn more and want everything GUI based.

Heh, I don't care for Jeff either, the line just popped into my head..
But aw yeah, I love Eddie/George! Never heard Lewis though, I'll have to check 'em out.

You could use CSE lite and notepad++ .

But I see what some of these guys/ purists are saying, but depending on your skill with what language your using, it's a good idea to have something to back you up.

CSE lite has a dictionary of both XHTML and CSS then you get to a point where you don't need it.....but it's a double edged sword, it can make you lazy too and that is the result you don't want.

If you could afford Dreamweaver get it but use in classic Code/WYSIWYG, I am having to talk with a potential client because the person that made the last iteration of the sight used Dreamweaver or something of the sort in a WYSIWYG mode and clearly when something went wrong.....well you know the deal.

I'm all for taking the path of least resistance... But there is no denying that learning "how to do things" is much more rewarding, and useful, than finding a piece of software that will do them for you.

I have used WYSIWYG editors, I have used existing CMS platforms like Joomla and Wordpress, I've customized pre-existing themes/templates... And I have written full sites using nothing but Notepadd++ and a couple other tools... They all had their merits and uses, but the knowledge I gained by writing/dissecting php/MySQL/html on a plain notepad document and then troubleshooting the problems on a server is much more valuable than any knowledge of a proprietary piece of software I could have gained.
Nowadays I use a combination of Notepad++, xampp and Firefox with the FireBug add-on... Those three tools are more than enough to code what I need to code.

I've coded in nano, vim, and Joe's without any issues. Netbeans just makes it easier by a lot.

It's a usage I've never seen before. And I'm still not gonna bite at it.

Whether or not netbeans makes you a more efficient at scripting HTML, if you get too dependent on the IDE, and the IDE is taken away, you can't script [or at least your productivity drops through the floor]. Fact.

I'm not saying you haven't. I'm simply saying that, to me, the smarter way to learn to code/script is without an IDE so you don't learn to be dependent on it. An IDE is a tool that can enhance your abilities, but like a calculator, you can become dependent on it for simple calculations if you aren't careful.

+1 for the notepad++. I used to use dreamweaver, but by far the best editor out there. Also, +1 for the stay away from WYSIWYG editors when you are first learning, you aren't going to learn anything by hard designing.

I use Crimson Editor, its like notepad but with its has special features that make it much nicer than notepad. I also have Microsoft Essentials and Dreamweaver.... but in all honesty, they produce crappy code and I spend more time fixing it than had I just used Crimson Editor alone.

IMHO, Learning to code web pages in notepad teaches you more than using an IDE which only makes you dependent and can promote bad habits.

Notepad++ is a very decent editor, but usually it's for quick edits; just like Crimson Editor. There are many editors out there that are free and are more suited for larger development. Try out Netbeans or Aptana.

http://www.aptana.com/

This is specifically for web development and is a great alternative to Dreamweaver or Coda
