Help with a GPU upgrade :)

Thread Starter
Well a friend asked me about upgrading his old sapphire HD3870 512MB. I looked a bit around and always thinking of price I ended between 6790 1GB and 6850 1GB. There are a couple of different brands like Club3D, Sapphire, Asus and Gigabyte. Afar from that I found an XFX 6950 1GB with an ok price. WellI just need some suggestions. He has a C2Quad Q6600 with 2giga ram at 1333 (he will prbably add another 2)

Not sure if these cards will bottleneck with the system. Well I hope you will give me your lights XD

P.S.
If 6950 does not have a BIG difference in your opinion do not even comment it XD

Thanks for all the help

Get the 6950 if you can. If not, go with 6850!

HD 6950 is the beast but if it's expensive then get HD 6790 as it beats HD 6850...

Don't know where you heard that. The 6790 is roughly on par with a 550 Ti and the 6850 is closer to a 6950 than it is to a 550 Ti.

If he has the money go for a 6950 2GB and unlock it to a 6970.

The 6850 will max out most games at 1080p. I can testify to that.

EDIT: He wouldn't be seeing any bottlenecks with that CPU, maybe get him to OC if his board is good enough and he hasn't already.

Get the 6870 if you can but stay away from XFX. Get an ASUS, Sapphire or MSI.

For me, I would actually suggest a GTX 460 as I heard that the performance of the Q6600 matches perfectly with that of the GTX 460. I have a sneaking suspicion that the 6950 may be a little bottle necked by the Q6600, and the GTX 460 should do the trick nevertheless. They can be had for REAL cheap here on OCN! However, if you need to buy retail, newegg has a great deal on the Zotac GeForce GTX 460 1GB at ~$150, and ~$120 AR. Also the great thing about this card is its Dual-DVI support!
