pcie2.0x4 for my 5850?

Thread Starter
I have an M4A88T-V EVO series mobo with an ati radeon hd5850 and an asus xonar essence stx. There is about an inch between them which worries me about heat.
my xonar is in the pciex1 slot and my 5850 is in the pcie 2.0x16 slot. My question is regarding the seperation of these two components due to heat. Can and how do I put my xonar in a regular pci express slot, or would I be better off putting my 5850 in the pci ex4 slot? Another reason I need the separation space is due to my rolling the opamps in the xonar.
I once a while back tried the gpu in the pci ex4 slot but it didnt work-but with a little loss of performance I know you can (can someone explain how)?

-thanks in advance

There are two questions here, I'll answer them separately:
*a 5850 in a PCIe x4 slot will take a massive performance hit even if you make it work
*about cooling the Xonar I suggest getting a flexible PCIe extension ribbon and to position the sound card wherever it would have more room to breathe.

In any case placing the 5850 in an x4 slot is a very bad idea even if it would work. You should start from the assumption the 5850 needs to stay there and work out a way to cool the Xonar - either using a PCIe extension ribbon or by doing a custom cooler.

this extension ribbon-could you give me a link, I really can't find anything like that. Very awesome solution if it's like what I'm thinking. Is it an adapter that would fit in a pcie2.0x4 slot (pcie2.0x4 to pcie x1) if that's not what you mean I don't see or understand what your referring to

The xonar will work in any PCI-e slot, not just an X1. You can put the soundcard in the other PCI-e x16 slot.

But really you shouldn't have to worry about heat to begin with. Sound cards don't make much heat, so as long as the sound card isn't blocking the graphics card fans, you should be all set.

Personally I think your making a problem for yourself where in reality there isnt one. As said in the previous post the heat generated from a soundcard will be next to nothing and will not have an affect on your 5850.

so I can pop my xonar into the PCIe 2.0 x16gray @ x4 mode? Would I have to set anything up in bios or uninstall and reinstall the drivers or would it be automatically read?

well now it's down to taking the card in and out-do I want easy access. Like I said there there is maybe an inch between the 2 cards, and I have big hands
