I'm an idiot: help me understand - Page 3

Thank everyone for their replies, +1 for those that actually read the OP.

So to recap, CUDA and SP are the same thing, different marketing terms. I't seems to be a quality vs. quanity argument. But how does something like OpenCL not have the same performance across both platforms if nVidia has 1/4 amount of the SP, but each SP is 4x as powerful?

Speaking of, what new techs are coming soon for GPUs? What's the step after fermi & cayman? Is there any benefit going with a (example) intel+nvidia platform versus a intel+ATI, or on the flipside, AMD+ati, AMD +nvidia

What does ROP mean and how does it affect gaming performance? Is it the amount of pixels a GPU can push?

I'll do a mass quote reply later after i gets home and settle in for the night.

For all practical purposes the actual clock speeds for any card really shouldn't be a major criteria for selecting a card. There are simply too many variables that make a large impact on performance outside of the core/mem clock speeds (eg. specific games, resolution, cpu/ram, overclocking performance, personal preference on features). The best thing to do is do your homework, and find some realworld benchmarks that come close to your setup, and select the card that fits your needs.

You are completely right.

I will spend weeks researching the right component when the time comes. The top one below will take the most time out of that research and the bottom the least.
  • GPU
  • MB
  • Case
  • Power Supply
  • CPU
  • HDD/SSD
  • Memory
  • Everything else.

The kind people here helped my understanding of why a marketing term exists, and I gained a deeper understanding of the how the hardware works.

I'll probably go with AMD when I do build the rig, but that's due to a bias more than anything else. Priceerformance is very important to me. If I was to build one now (Q2 2011) it would be a 2500K with a 570 or 6970, based off benchmarks alone. I only run @ 1080p, so I really wouldn't need the extra VRAM. But Hopefully that won't be the case in 2012, I want to add two more monitors and go with surround/eyefinity. I'll have 2k by then, it will be fun shopping .

Sadly, most games are optimized in favor of Nvidia cards, although they will deny it. This is mainly because Nvidia won the very first gaming card battle when cards were first developed for GAMERS. Typically these days though, an AMD (previously ATI) card is MORE powerful, but the games do not take advantage of them...hence i have a GTX285. However, on that note, I am planning on going AMD 6950 xfire...unbeatable $$$/performance, even with stock units.

Your best bet is to check out lots of benchmarks, both official and unofficial (those made by users like on overclock.net).

Sadly, that's part of the reason why Nvidia isn't off the table. Thats why I'm glad when games like BF3 use the Havoc physics engine instead of the Nvidia exclusive.

If I go multi-card, I'll be getting the same thing as you- great scalability and gread priceerformace.

1024x768 is not an HD resolution.

1024x768 = 786,432 pixels
1280x720 = 921,600 pixels

1024x768 has less pixels than even the minimum HD resolution, so it's not HD by any stretch of the term.

True, and it is also a 4:3 aspect ratio, which looks horrible on new 16:9 monitors.
