[PCgamer] EA : “we’d like to be the worldwide leader in digital publishing" - Page 4

I don't get the whole competition thing.
EA tells Steam do to an entire week of EA deals and it happens, because EA wants it and not because of Steam, right?
How is the competition needed when its not Steam setting the prices but the publisher? And how does it help when we see games on Origin and not on Steam, thats competition? I have no problem with Origin existing but I want to keep my games on Steam and won't add another service anytime.

EB Games? Gamestop online? Best Buy??

Direct 2 Drive?

I really doubt EA will make it a actual total exclusive. More like a "middle finger to Steam come get Origin" kinda thing

Why all the hate lol. I got Alice on it and pre ordered Battlefield 3 on origin and it actually runs really nicely. They need to get a lot more support but as it stands right now I would have no problems using it for all my EA games. The downloads are fast and it runs smoothly. Until I hit a problem i won't hate it. Do i prefer steam yes i do (and only becuase i prefer one client and i have like 60 games on steam), but its been out longer and is more polished. I will see what the future brings but it definitely has promise especially with more support.

Steam ain't perfect but it is established and not going to disappear any time soon.
Let me give you some analogies:

How good do you think cars would be if there were only 1 manufacturer out there? How much better would Intel chips be every generation if there were no AMD to fight against? How good would Rock music be if only one band was making tunes?

There needs to be competition to push the hobby. Without competition, there is no reason to innovate, play fair, or do anything that benefits the customer. As good as Steam is, they are the 800 pound gorilla of PC digi distribution. There needs to be more alternatives to keep things fresh. I find it funny that people complain about having too many programs for managing games, but they don't complain about having 15 different types of software for burning ISOs or reading PDFs.

They have already done it...with the StarWars MMO and have pulled Crysis 2.

Still a long time till BF3 release...it could happen yet.

I don't really see why they want to limit their market exposure. You'd think if they could get Starbucks to sell it; they would let them. But no...if you want it digitally than you have to go to Origin.

But then I don't see HL2 on D2D either. Maybe if Valve would let EA sell Portal 2 on Origin then Steam could sell EA games again.

If EA wants to be the leader they have to lead by example. Valve have realised this, they currently have the best DD service out there. On any computer, you can log on, install your games, and play. They have the best security and a good anti-cheat system. The steam client is excellent compared to everything else. Not perfect, but good.

Origin is tight-arse, if I may say so. If you have a flaky connection and your download drops out, that's counted as an installation. Not cool. Even EA games on steam don't do that. In fact, it seems that only EA games have install limits for digital versions.

Main point: EA can't knock steam out of the top dog position until they can match steam in features and pricing.

In a perfect world: All games are available on every DD service, including valve games. This gives people freedom of choice. I hope EA and Valve aim for this. Exclusives are not cool.

Why do you think sometimes you can find a game on sale at BestBuy but not EB? Walmart is also great place to find game frequently on sale. Publisher sets the realease date and suggested price. Companies like EB and Best Buy buy and then decide what to then charge un order to make profit. Which is very hard since video games have hardly any profit margin. If Best Buy wants the can offer a sale and lose money on the stock of a game they purchased in hopes of getting customer in the store so they can buy utems with larger profit margins.

What is Steam innovating/responsible for? EA tells them how much to sell their EA games for. EA comes in with their own client. Guess what. They'll sooner pull their content from Steam than start a price war to attract customers....as they just did.

Tell me again, how this is good for you or I the consumer? EA ain't creating any competition. There's nothing "competitive" about any of this.

Steam's deals are what is going to really pull them ahead here. Unless Origin is ready to compete with that, it'll never take off.

Excellent points, saves me some typing. It would be very hard to pull off some of the huge deals that Valve puts on, like the Summer and Winter sales. The only contender (imo) as yet for DD is D2D really. They have some nice disount sales semi frequently, and decent larger sales as well. I would put them in 2nd to Steam for now. EA has a pretty good library to work with, but if they can't put some great prices down, I don't see them leading anything, just joining the pack.
