[PCgamer] EA : “we’d like to be the worldwide leader in digital publishing" - Page 5

£29.99 on GAME.co.uk retail edition - 10% student discount if bought in store, so £26.99=D

This is compared to £39.99 on Origin, no student discount and no retail box and book.

Hmm, £26.99 or £39.99?

If Best Buy wants the can offer a sale and lose money on the stock of a game they purchased in hopes of getting customer in the store so they can buy utems with larger profit margins.
I don't think thats how Steam works. It's still digital and not retail what were talking about. I think Steam gets a percentage of the price they've sold the game for, which is set by the publisher.

Competition is good.

I love Valve and will probably just use steam, but competition causes innovation. I like that.

And just explain to me how you can improve your rep if you act like you don't care about PC platform itself?

Just compare Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. ME2 is a good action game, but that's just it... Where are those RPG elements from ME1? Inventory? Exploring planets on your own in a vehicle? They cut all those things from ME2 and made it a third person shooter, which is great, but it's dumbed down obviously.

Then compare Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2... I won't even bother with this comparison.

FIFA? Why would they release different versions on PC and consoles? Obviously the console version is alot better and until FIFA11 they were selling the same FIFA for years on PC. They also said that PC can't run the console version of FIFA. FIFA12 will also be different on PC and consoles.

And then there was Dead Space, both 1 and 2, which was released on PC with consolised controls which made it have negative acceleration when played on PC. They just didn't care enough to atleast optimise it for PC.

I do like some of their games, I don't deny that... For an example BF3 looks like it's going to be awesome, and I don't doubt it at all.

People keep calling this "competition". How is it competitive in any way shape or form? EA is pulling content from other providers and creating exclusives rather than cut prices. This is the antithesis of competition as of now, IMHO. This is EA not wanting to pay Steam a cut.

Burning a CD and reading a PDF does not, first off and simply, require you to purchase the program. Specifically, there are a great deal of PDF reading programs and ISO burning programs that are freeware, open source, etc.

Besides that simple fact, you also have the factor of that digital distribution, through the Steam model, allows you to keep your game library on their servers, and thusly not need to download a copy of every game you own. Having two, three, five, or fifteen services that provide this fragment your game library, meaning confusion when looking for a copy of your game (think about if you stored all of your games in a few different boxes, and trying to search for one), as well as meaning that you're spreading your gaming library out between services that may very well not be likely the most secure, as per recent developments.

Now, if we could get roughly all games being released to be available on all (or, at least, most) digital distribution services, then it'd come down to a feature/price war, which would likely then smooth over the playing field until two or three big names were left. In any regard, I already have a lot of money invested in Steam, so I have no real desire to think about deserting them for another company. I also have very little desire to invest anywhere near as heavily in another digital distribution company as I do not want to fragment my holdings.

Yeah, pretty much. However, I'm still of the mindset that games should not need internet unless they are internet-multiplayer-only, so both Steam and EA can shove it in this respect.
I'm not a multiplayer type game gamer(all them fps's ect) so I don't really see any of the features any of these platforms offer. I hear about a game, I >insert favorite search engine here> prices, and grab up the cheapest one, I download it, and enjoy. Pretty simple for me =) I really give 3 poo's where it comes from. Does anyone really care your hanes undershirts came from wally world or taget, prolly not.

Don't buy their crap and vote with your wallet. They are competing with a download service, if it's garbage then let them know. Valve may turn evil , heck, look at Ep3. Those evil bastards .
