I was going to get another 6950 for Crossfire, with this news I think i'll just wait and get a 7xxx. Sounds like it could be pretty beastly.

Almost the same performance in a single GPU next gen card.
Fab proccess went from 55nm > 40 nm
now we are moving from 40 > 28nm
So yeah its entirely possible.

If the WCCF Tech pictures are accurate we can see a transition from a Switched Hub architecture to a brand new architecture that I cannot identify as of yet.
This wont be the same 5xxx > 6xxx performance

Performance has nearly doubled in the past more times than not...

X850xt to x1950
X1950 to 3870
3870 to 4870
4870 to 5870

Same thing for Nvidia.

The 28nm die is half the size of the 40nm so doubling performance is possible.

I really wanted to wait out this generation with my 4890 but my upgrade to a 30", 2560x1600 resolution LCD meant I couldn't put it off.

I think I'll still buy either AMD's or Nvidia's 28nm product though.

Same thing for Nvidia.

The 28nm die is half the size of the 40nm so doubling performance is possible.

Call me cynical, but I will suggest the revolutionary idea that chip makers, in their releases, aren't dictated by the upper limit they can physically push with thier architecture/dies, but rather marketing considerations that have to do with keeping a steady curve to keep sales steady, which is also related to games and gfx requirements of the current/past gen.

In other words, if a single 6950/6970 (to say nothing of a 6990) can run almost every game at max quality at stock settings today. Then it can be safely assumed that AMD/Nvidia will be in no hurry to release a single gpu card that can beat a 6990 by 200%. It would simply be bad marketing to push the tech that fast, when there's no actual need for it.

They would rather release their solutions in small increments to milk the new architecture for all it's worth, like they've been doing all these years. The exceptions usually go bankrupt (Voodoo anyone? Apples and Oranges I know, but just saying).

Edit: Just to clarify, this is not to say that the 7xxx or 7xx won't have solutions that offer double performance (whenever I say performance I cringe, I actually mean benchmarking results) than the current gen. It's to say that if you buy a 6970 today, you won't see a 7970 with double performance for another year, give or take (more likely give, if the new series gets released by Nov/Christmas). Like others have said, you'll get the lower end of the mid-range series first, so I'll suggest that Jan/Feb 2012 is around the time you'll get a card that will slightly edge a 6950/6970 from the 7xxx series.
