Keeping down temps in 6970 crossfire

So I just got my two new 6970s today and am about to install them together once I finish testing if one runs significantly hotter than the other (so I can put the coolest one as the top card). Since the space between them is going to be so tight though I'm concerned about temps for the top card, especially since these things run so hot just by themselves. I'm thinking of ordering some ultra kaze 3000 fans to stick on the HDD bay of my case to get increased airflow over the cards, as well as maybe utilizing the expansion slot bay fan cover that the ATCS 840 comes with (supposedly helps suck out hot air faster). Think that'll work?

Also, while doing a google search about this problem I found some posts on various boards (including this one I think) talking about a "zip-tie trick" which sounded like it involved sticking a zip tie between the cards. How does that work? Do you stick in on its side to increase leverage, or even stick in the fat part only? Do you put it in the middle of the two cards, at the end near the intake fan, or at the end near the exhaust? And is there any danger of the zip tie getting sucked into the intake fan?

I have to keep my fan speed to 55% just to keep it from reaching 90C in game. Is yours ASUS by any chance?

No, both 6970s are XFX. Reference version I should add.

55% fanspeed.

That, or move the card down 1 slot.

I'd take 4x over 16/8x high temps any day.

I have mine undervolted when gaming @ 1V that keeps temps around 68C with 46% fan speed with afterburner. Try undervolting to save a few degrees

That was my original plan but then I noticed that my motherboard doesn't align with the case's expansion slots properly, the result of which is that I can't plug a two slot device into the last PCI-e slot.

Anyway, I'll probably just keep the fan high if that works. I'm not really bothered too much about noise. I had my 5970's fan on 60% which didn't really bother me, so assuming the 6970's fan has the same volume at the same speed I think I can work with 55%.
