Is it necessary to use TIM?

Thread Starter
I have a i5 2500k and a cooler master hyper 212+. I run at about 4.5 ghz easy at about 55-60 C.

Is it necessary to use TIM?

are my temps good, or should I shoot for another 5-10 C?

Or should I just save myself the trouble? I'm not looking for massive overclocks with my CPU.

Wait did you not use any TIM when you installed the cooler or do you mean should you use better TIM?

The CPU and heatsink base are not perfectly flat. There are tiny grooves which means the heatsink isn't in full contact with the chip and therefore will not draw all the heat out. TIM fills these gaps meaning the heatsink will do it's job properly.
