Why do you need an attached mic? Just get a desk mic and a pair of Skullcandys.

It doesn't really matter. At $30 for in-ear headphones he's not going to do much better. Maybe some Jlabs off Amazon? Or Razer Moray? I'm just grasping at straws. If you have a local Sony store or Apple store see if you can just try on some earbuds and see what you like. Asking for decent quality AND a mic at $30 is going to be pretty difficult.

For $30, he can do a lot better. The Meelectronics M6P/M9P are pretty good choices in that range.

I have some similar ones,EX-36V,has good bass for the driver size, overall good sound for earbuds in the $20-30 range.
Just get a desktop mic, even a cheap desktop one is probably better than ones built into earbuds.
