Well if you don't care much about graphics, might I recommend "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura"

It doesn't have a randomly generated world, but otherwise it's great.
It has a very deep plot and a great soundtrack that will suck you in, you won't even feel you're playing a 'game'. And you aren't exactly driven by the story, as you can go on your own pace, with the main quest being as a guide rather than a requirement.

It is set in a dystopian world, which is heavily shown with the quests you endeavor on as well as the characters you speak with/accompany you. You can almost feel the frustration of the characters you talk with oozing from your screen.

As for the character development, it is as RPGing as it comes. With a unique magic and science skills. The race/character (which there are many) you choose will reflect upon your quests and conversations.

All in all it's one of the most memorable RPGs I have played.

I saw a "Let's Play" of this game on youtube, and I can vouch for it. The game looked like a lot of fun, and the person playing it was having a great time. As was mentioned, it appears dated graphics wise, but story and gameplay wise, its right up there with the best of them!
Great recommendation __Pat__

Thank you! *blushes*

I forgot to mention it's available on GoG for just $6 http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arcan...magick_obscura

in case you're interested (most people try on Steam, don't find it and give up )
Playing it will be even more fun than just watching as you get to make your own choices
I think I'll play it again once I'm done with The witcher 1/2

Just drop your random generation criterium and go with Morrowind.

Seriously.

Just do it.

It doesn't force the storyline down your throat like other series and even Oblivion do. It lets you do whatever the hell you want, when you want. In a beautiful, fascinating world and culture(s).

Play it now.

all this talk about Morrowind.. I have to ask, is it really worth playing? It's dated graphics are putting me off, and how's the combat? better than Oblivion?
