Afterburner won't let me adjust fan speed below 40 on GTX 570

Thread Starter
I just got a GTX 570 Twin Frozr II. I've got Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 3 installed and for some reason the fan setting won't let me adjust the fans below 40. The problem is a setting of 40 makes it clearly audible and I'd like to setup a custom config where the card is virtually silent when idle. Am I missing something or is this a BIOS limitation? My GTX 470 Twin Frozr doesn't have this problem.

No it wont... its a failsafe so you dont burnout your card (accidently). It does the same with my 560 Ti

I wonder why they decided on such a high figure? My GTX 470 Twin Frozr II let me go down to 25% and it runs hotter than the GTX 570. At this point, 40% is complete overkill. If I was able to set it to 25% it would still likely run significantly cooler than the 470.

Who knows? Id like to go lower than 40% myself.

It is a lock in the BIOS. You can actually unlock it by editing the BIOS using NiBitor.
You might even get lucky and find the modified BIOS for your card on this site:

You are at 28 Degrees on Idle. Thats amazing. I dont see the need to want to go lower fan speed? What are the benefits for you? Surely it cant be that noisy?
For some ppl it IS noisy.

A few mails to MSI and nvidia could produce a lower limit in the bios (I think even 25% should be plenty for a powerful cooler such as this).

I'm not sure about MSI, but EVGA always releases a fan unlocker that lets you go up to 100% and down to 30% after a while.
