Graphical Glitches with HD 4890 ?

Thread Starter
Hello All,

I have an XFX HD 4890 1GB but suspect something is wrong.

I consistently get red and blue (but also green, purple and yellow) "bubbles" or "dots" that flash around the screen in semi-regular patterns. I say bubbles because the larger ones get whiter towards the center.

Other graphical glitches are aplenty. Small squares and blocks flash, weird huge lines are drawn and black planar surfaces cover objects. This occurs heavily in Starcraft 2, Fallout 3 and Team Fortress 2. Sometimes it's just minor stuff, a single, subtle flashing piece of wall, but other times it can be unplayable with huge lines ripping across the screen and starbursts of dots.

Restarting my computer helps a lot with this problem. Heat (hot days) seems to make things worse.

I have had programs detect driver errors, and I have suffered bluescreens related to video/graphical errors. However, my drivers are definitely current.

Here's what I'm running.

Windows 7 Ult 32bit

Intel Core i5 2500K

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072

MSI P67A-G45 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130582

(2x) CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233141

XFX HD-489A-ZDFC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150359R

I just built this computer this week. It seems to be working great, but it's having the exact same graphical glitches that my last computer suffered. I did swap out the GFX card but it's possible I'm making the same human error as last time, too. So before I make any conclusions I'd like the OCN team to chime in.

If anyone can suggest a program or method so I can take screenshots (I could even use my iphone to snap a picture of it) I would be more than willing to do so, to give everyone a better idea of what's going on.

Thanks all, and God Bless !

That sounds like something is unstable. What power supply are you using? When you say you swapped out the gpu, do you mean you transferred it over from the old build?
OffTopic: If you have 8 GB of ram and a 32 bit version of windows, you can only use 4 gb of ram (32 bits can only address 4gb of ram, counting both gpu and main memory.)

I'm using the PSU that came with my Antec gaming case, a 950 with a 650W power supply.

Yes, I had an old computer (with the exact same issues!) and just built a new one this week- totally new Mobo, RAM, CPU. Same case, same HDD, same PSU and same GPU.

Should I do any tests of my power supply, or perhaps a heat issue?

Thanks again

Edit: Haha, I know I should have installed 64bit. I installed the 32bit by accident but will install the 64bit in a few weeks, once I reformat. I just wanted to get everything set up and working first. But you're right, I did mean to install the 64bit at first Lol.

Yeah, I thought it might be a bad GPU. Any other people wanna take a shot at this? Agree/Disagree?

Also, if it's a bad GPU, what are my options? Do I have to buy a new GPU? If so, can you suggest one? I didn't upgrade it because I'm not playing anything new at all. My 4890 is a perfect graphical processor... when it works. frown.gif

....Whaaa? BAKE IT?

I did some research and found out that my GPU Fan was set to 43%... and idling at 65c. After setting the fan up to 100% it quickly cooled down to a nice 52-53c. That's actually one tick off from the bottom of the "heat dial/gauge"

Think I can do anything else? I figured the heat seemed like it might be related and maybe that will help it some.

Egads, I just fired up FEAR 1 off of steam and it got black squares all over it. As soon as I turned it off, the heat gauge for my GPU was around 70c. frown.gif

If it's overclocked, reset it to stock and see if the problem persists.

If not, you've now been introduced to XFX's purely wonderful hardware design. Ugh.
