Wanting a Server

post #1 of 16
Thread Starter
I have been wanting to Build a server for some time now, and we are redoing all the networking in the house, so i thought it would be a good time to build and home server and add it to it. I just wanted something simple that a few computer can access all central files, But something in which I can upgrade in the future fairly easily. Doesn't have too be fancy just something simple and fairly cost effective. But I am new to all the server business so i don't really know where to start or what to buy or look at. So just looking for some help, maybe a starting place to look =D

And any suggestions in what i should buy, or if i should build or buy pre built one.

Thanks =D

Do you have any unused hardware lying around? That's likely to be the best place to start. You don't need anything fancy at all for a basic home server - a P3 can do fileserving as well as an i7 can...

Depending on what you want to use it for, you may not need a fair amount of RAM. Simple fileserving etc has quite low memory requirements - you only need more RAM if you want to run several tasks at once or run a few VMs etc.

I built a new server not to long ago, out of odd bits laying around.

2.2 Core2Duo
4GB DDR2
OEM Dell board
2x 320GB SATA (RAID 1)
16x LG DVDRW
500 watt Antec PSU

Only thing I bought was the case, Silverstone HTPC unit.

It runs Ubuntu Server 10.10 x64
Serves web, mail, ftp, vpn, ventrilo, and of course files on the local network.

Is it overkill? Yes. Do I love it? Yes.
